The MASLD criteria overlook a number of adolescent patients with severe steatosis

We read with a great interest the consensus statement on the proposed new fatty liver disease nomenclature to replace non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and diagnostic criteria for diagnosing MASLD in children and adolescents 1. These criteria are similar (although not identical) to the diagnostic criteria of the metabolic dysfunction –associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), which was the first definition to provide a set of positive diagnostic criteria that acknowledge that fatty liver is a continuum across the lifespan 2-4.
