Different cancers in the same basket: intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm-derived versus concomitant pancreatic carcinomas
We read with great interest an article by Youssef et al1 reporting their investigation of risk factors for pancreatic cancer incidence among patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). In a nested case-control study within a previously established cohort of 7211 veterans in the United States,2 the authors successfully identified patient and cyst characteristics associated with the long-term risk of pancreatic cancer (eg, older age and dilatation of the main pancreatic duct). The current study has notable strengths, including the analysis of cancer as an outcome variable rather than surrogate endpoints (eg, cyst growth).
