The relationship between duration of delirium and clinical outcomes in patients with acute heart failure

Delirium, an acute disorder characterized by inattention and global cognitive dysfunction, is associated with adverse outcomes in patients with acute medical conditions, particularly in older patients. It is hypothesized that inflammation, stress, and neurohormonal dysregulation may contribute to the development of delirium, although the exact underlying mechanism remains unclear [1]. Heart failure is associated not only with cardiac dysfunction and pulmonary compromise, but also with inadequate cerebral perfusion and electrolyte abnormalities.
