Percutaneous Approach to Mechanical Aortic Valve Prosthesis Paravalvular Leak Closure: Lessons Learned
An adverse outcome of cardiac valve replacement, either open surgical replacement or percutaneous replacement, is paravalvular leak (PVL). The incidence of moderate or severe PVL has been reported up to 24% in post-mitral valve replacement, post-transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacements, and mechanical valve replacements in either position.1-3 A clinically significant PVL can present with hemolytic anemia, symptoms of congestive heart failure, and is associated with increased mortality.
