Machine learning algorithms for prediction of ventilator associated pneumonia in traumatic brain injury patients from the MIMIC-III database

As a common type of central nervous system injury, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is still widespread in the world and causes huge burden to family of victims and economy of the society. Due to the systemic pathophysiological process after TBI, the prognosis of TBI patients is not only determined by the severity of intracranial injury, but also influenced by extracranial complications caused by intrinsic pathophysiological changes and iatrogenic interventions. As a common pulmonary complication, the ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) has been reported widely occurring in TBI patients with the incidence ranging from 20.4 % to 60.6%.
