Management of people with prediabetes and the implementation of diabetes prevention programme
Prediabetes is a state of hyperglycemia between normal and diabetes, in which individuals are at increased risk of progression to type 2 diabetes (T2D). The conversion rate of prediabetes to T2D is 7 % in the first year and 13 % within 2 years according to a cohort study among 14,272 participants in the United Kingdom [9]. Comparable figure of about 10 % conversion rate per year is reported in the United States [4]. Among individuals with prediabetes, there is also greater chance of having comorbid dyslipidemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease than those with normal glucose tolerance [6], as well as higher risk of other complications including cancer, non-vascular and non-cancer death [10].
