Association between PLA2 gene polymorphisms and treatment response to antipsychotic medications: a study of antipsychotic-na ïve first-episode psychosis patients and nonadherent chronic psychosis patients

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is a diverse superfamily of enzymes that hydrolyze fatty acids from the sn-2 position of membrane phospholipids, thereby liberating free fatty acids and producing lysophospholipids [1]. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), such as arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), are predominantly incorporated at the sn-2 position of brain phospholipids [2]. PLA2 enzymes participate in a multitude of signaling processes, including dopaminergic neurotransmission, insulin secretion, and inflammation [1 –6].
