Impact of sarcopenia on variceal rebleeding in patients after endoscopic therapy: a multicenter retrospective cohort study based on propensity score matching
CONCLUSION: Sarcopenia was significantly associated with a high 2-year rebleeding rate in liver cirrhosis patients after endoscopic treatment. Therefore, the precise evaluation of a patient's nutritional status, including sarcopenia becomes mandatory before endoscopic treatment.PMID:38699840 | DOI:10.1080/07853890.2024.2349180 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

A systematic review and meta-analysis of extra-intestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) countries
CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study arthralgia and arthritis were the most common extra-intestinal manifestation of IBD followed by dermatologic and ocular involvements. This extra-intestinal manifestation can challenge the patients' management and identifying their pattern is important during the disease course.PMID:38694357 | PMC:PMC11060319 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001543 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Unilateral lateral rectus palsy following dengue: a case report
CONCLUSION: This is the first documented case report of paralytic squint post-severe dengue in Nepal, emphasizing the importance of considering it as a differential diagnosis in tropical regions with endemic dengue infections. The case report advocates early identification and treatment of ophthalmic issues, notably with prednisolone, to achieve favourable outcomes, as evidenced by improvements in visual acuity, esotropia, and diplopia during follow-ups. Further research is essential to determine optimal treatment strategies for such neurological complications associated with dengue fever.PMID:38694359 | PMC:PMC11060301 | ...

Stunting and its associated factors among children living with HIV/AIDS: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children was very high. Poor ART adherence, lack of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis, opportunistic infection, and low feeding frequency were significantly associated to stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children. Strategies need to be devised to address factors amenable to modification to improve the growth of children living with HIV/AIDS.PMID:38694360 | PMC:PMC11060262 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001961 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Probiotic formulations and gastro-intestinal diseases in the paediatric population: a narrative review
CONCLUSION: This study concludes that single-organism and composite probiotics are effective complementary therapies for treating gastrointestinal disorders in the pediatric population. Hence, healthcare professionals should consider using probiotics in standard treatment regimens, and educating guardians can enhance the benefits of probiotic therapy. Further research is recommended to identify the optimal strains and dosages for specific conditions and demographics. The integration of probiotics in clinical practice and ongoing research can contribute to reducing the incidence and severity of gastrointestinal disorders in...

Safety of surgery: quality assessment of meta-analyses on the WHO checklist
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis coincides with obtaining lower complications and mortality rates with the WHO surgical safety checklist. However, the studies included in the meta-analyses were mostly observational, with potential biases, and according to the AMSTAR 2 tool, the overall confidence in the results of the evaluated studies was critically low.PMID:38694363 | PMC:PMC11060208 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000002006 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Incidental diagnosis of primary appendiceal signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma after appendectomy for acute appendicitis: a case report
CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis of ASCA can incidentally be made on pathological specimen following appendectomy for appendicitis. A routine pathological examination should be emphasized, and appendectomy may not be the endpoint of the treatment. Hemicolectomy and adjuvant therapy might ensue upon the diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasm. The poor prognosis of ASCA makes a timely diagnosis significant. Basic research is promising to unravel the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, finding typical tumor markers for screening and novel effective therapies for advanced cases.PMID:38694365 | PMC:PMC11060291 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000...

A comparison of symptoms and quality of life between medial flap and coblation turbinator of inferior turbinate reduction in endoscopic septoturbinoplasty: an analysis of 108 cases
CONCLUSIONS: Septoturbinoplasty treatment of septum deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy led to less symptoms as well as better HQOL for all two patient groups. Therefore, these techniques were an effective intervention for turbinate reduction, and they are equally efficient in the long term.PMID:38694367 | PMC:PMC11060241 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001863 (Source: Annals of Medicine)
