Is health expenditure on immunisation associated with immunisation coverage in sub-Saharan Africa? A multicountry analysis, 2013-2017
Conclusions There is a need to facilitate the development of strategies that support African countries to increase domestic financing for national immunisation programmes towards achieving 2030 targets for immunisation coverage. (Source: BMJ Open)

265 Patient-level trends in vaccine uptake during the COVID pandemic
Influenza and tetanus toxoid reduced diphtheria toxoid, acellular pertussis(TDaP) vaccines are safe, effective, and recommended in pregnancy. Despite this, significant vaccine hesitancy exists in pregnancy. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vaccine hesitancy is not well understood. Wedescribe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient-level influenza, TDaP, and dual vaccination trends. (Source: American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Population-Based Study of Pertussis Incidence and Risk Factors among Persons & gt;50 Years of Age, Australia
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Jan;30(1):105-115. doi: 10.3201/eid3001.230261.ABSTRACTDespite vaccination programs, pertussis has been poorly controlled, especially among older adults in Australia. This longitudinal, retrospective, observational study aimed to estimate the incidence and risk factors of pertussis among persons ≥50 years of age in Australia in the primary care setting, including those with underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. We used the IQVIA general practitioner electronic medical record database to identify patients ≥50 years of age with a clinical diagnosis of pertussis during 2...

Analysis of maternal and child health spillover effects in PEPFAR countries
Conclusions This study demonstrated that important health indicators, beyond HIV, have been consistently and favourably influenced by PEPFAR presence. Child and maternal mortality have been substantially reduced, and childhood immunisation rates increased. We also found no evidence of ‘crowding out’ or negative spillovers in these resource-poor countries. These findings add to the body of evidence that PEPFAR has had favourable health effects beyond HIV. The implications of these findings are that foreign aid for health in one area may have favourable health effects in other areas in recipient countries. More r...

The PRotective effect of maternal immunisation on preTerm birth: underlying mechanisms and role in newborn immune function: study protocol
Maternal immunisation, a low cost and high efficacy intervention is recommended for its pathogen specific protection. Evidence suggests that maternal immunisation has another significant impact: reduction of preterm birth (PTB), the single greatest cause of childhood morbidity and mortality globally. Our overarching question is: how does maternal immunisation modify the immune system in pregnant women and/or their newborn to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes and enhance the newborn infant’s capacity to protect itself from infectious diseases during early childhood? To answer this question we are conducting a multi-site, ...

Coverage, Trends, and Inequalities of Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Indicators among the Poor and Non-Poor in the Most Populous Cities from 38 Sub-Saharan African Countries
AbstractRapid urbanization is likely to be associated with suboptimal access to essential health services. This is especially true in cities from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where urbanization is outpacing improvements in infrastructure. We assessed the current situation in regard to several markers of maternal, newborn, and child health, including indicators of coverage of health interventions (demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods, at least four antenatal care visits (ANC4+), institutional birth, and three doses of DPT vaccine[diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus]) and health status (stunting in children un...
