Wednesday Bible Study: Shit gets really real
Ch. 17 tells of the conquest of Israel -- the northern kingdom, aka Samaria -- by the Assyrian empire. Yes, this definitely happened. And it was indeed the practice of the Assyrians to deport at least part of the population of conquered territories. In the biblical account, essentially all of the population was removed and replaced by people from elsewhere. The deportees became known as the ten Lost Tribes of Israel. (The tribe of Dan had joined Judah earlier, so those two tribes survived) Historians dispute whether the deportation was really total, however. Nevertheless whatever Israelite population remained was diluted, ...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
The objective most consistent with recent operations is to conquer Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson, with a view to their eventual annexation and Russification. But not only are they some way from achieving that (w ith much of Donetsk still in Ukrainian hands and the Russia position in Kherson highly contested) it would also require an explicit Ukrainian surrender for it to serve as the basis for a declaration of victory. That will not be forthcoming.-----https://www.afr.com/world/europe/how-britain-giggled-its-way-into-crisis-20220710-p5b0giHow Britain giggled its way into crisisBoris Johnson has exposed the costs of Britain...

Minding Our Elders Blogs Newsletter: The Pains of Change
Dear Patient Readers,   The good news: It looks as if you won't need to resubscribe so I'm deleting the old list. The duplicate email should disappear in a day or two. If you find that for some reason you are not receiving your newsletters, please just resubscribe in the right margin here on www.mindingorueldersblogs.com. I don't expect that to happen, but tech is, well tech. The growing pains: *Speaking of tech, it's showing its underwear in the top panel with a bunch of gibberish. That should be gone by your next email. * Also, I'm working on a second option for a digest. In a few days, those of you who...

Changes (Good Ones) Coming for Subscribers to Minding Our Elders Blogs
Hello to my wonderful readers! Just a note to tell you I'm in the process of updating the newsletter format. While the newer version should be visually more pleasant, the biggest benefit will be to allow you to alter your email preferences. This means that you'll be able to choose a digest form rather than the daily emails that many prefer.  The downside is that you'll need to resubscribe to continue receiving the Minding Our Elders newsletter. It's not hard. You'll receive a confirmation email just as you did when you originally signed up. Then, you'll need to confirm, but in the process, you can make your prefere...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 19: War, and Peace
George SelginThanks to the Roosevelt Recession, in the spring of 1938 the New Deal ' s " Keynesians " finally found themselves in the saddle, displacing the planners, reformers, and trust-busters whose legislative efforts had already run out of steam some months before. The Keynesians ' rise was symbolized by the $3 billion spending program FDR announced during hisfireside chat that April.[1]But the crisis that gave Keynesians the upper hand also proved fatal to the Roosevelt administration ' s more ambitious plans, Keynesian or otherwise. Thanks to it, voters sent many Democrats, and New Deal democrats especially, packing...

July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

Recognizing Caregiver Burnout
Photo credit Karolina Grabowska Caregiver burnout isn’t something that happens all at once. We all have good days and bad days, which is normal. Eventually, though, we may find ourselves inching dangerously close to a meltdown over a situation that would have been considered a mild irritation prior to caregiving. The future begins to look bleak, and our responsibilities seem endless. That’s when you know you’ve reached a breaking point. So, how do you spot and extinguish the small fires that, left smoldering, can eventually lead to burnout? What do you do if you feel your nerves are already fried? The best appr...

We Have a Right to Privacy …Right?
BY KIM BELLARD Well, they did it.  We had a warning they were going to do it, from the leaked opinion in May, but it still was a blow to well over half the country when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. It didn’t rule that abortion was unconstitutional – as Justice Kavanaugh wrote. “On the question of abortion, the Constitution is therefore neither pro-life nor pro-choice” – but, rather, left it to the “voters,” i.e., the states, to decide.  And, boy, the “pro-life” states have been deciding and are ready to do a lot more decidi...
