11 × 1 Minutes To Catch Up With The Most Important Digital Health Concepts
Every now and then I do a “One Minute Challenge” video, with the goal of explaining digital health-related concepts in just one minute. Here are these collected bits, a few of them just over a minute, something like a crash course on the basics.  Let’s see the topics I covered so far.  1. What is digital health?  This first video starts with the basics, what is digital health at all? What belongs here and what doesn’t? How will it change the role of medical professionals and patients? So many things can be packed in slightly more than 60 seconds.  2. Who is an e-patient? ...

Understanding Kinetic Energy and Trauma
With every trauma call we run, there are two things that are almost absolute certainties. And I don’t mean that in the tongue-in-cheek sense, like, “We are certain that the elderly fall victim will live on the third floor and the elevator will be broken or nonexistent.” or, “We are certain that the nursing home C.N.A. will call for that extended inter-facility transfer 12 minutes before the end of our shift.” type of certainty. I mean…even more certain than that. When people call us for trauma, these two things are certain. 1.) Two objects collided with each other. 2.) Someone calle...

Digital Transformation: How AI Could Spell a New Era of ‘ Smart Care ’
The following is a guest article by Faramarz Farhoodi, Founder and CEO at AI Nexus Healthcare. The term digital transformation can be interpreted in many different ways. Rather than transforming healthcare practices, I like to view it as transforming the way healthcare is practiced.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the unique ability to process vast amounts of data and make sense of what they represent. If this is combined with the ability to reason with this data, then this unlocks a whole new sphere of potential — where technology and traditional healthcare intersect in a state of mutual benefit. But what is required...

What Are K2 and Spice Anyway?
Chances are, you’ve probably heard about the new trend in synthetic cannabis products either from your local news media or from your ongoing EMS education. Over the past few years, these products have been increasing in prevalence around the US and in Europe. But what are these products anyway? Are they cannabis or not? Are they legal to posses? Are the effects similar to traditional marijuana? Here’s a quick rundown of what EMS folks should know about this new and growing trend in street pharmacology. Synthetic cannabis products have a variety of street names including Spice, K2, Herbal Incense, Potpourri, Barel...

The Secret Surveillance Capitalism That Suffuses Medicare
By MICHAEL MILLENSON Imagine a government program where private contractors boost their bottom line by secretly mining participants’ personal information, such as credit reports, shopping habits and even website logins. It’s called Medicare. This is open enrollment season, when 64 million elderly and disabled Americans choose between traditional fee-for-service Medicare and private Medicare Advantage (MA) health plans. MA membership is soaring; within a few years it’s expected to encompass the majority of beneficiaries. That popularity is due in no small part to the extra benefits plans c...

Elder Abuse on Film: A Geriatrician ’s Viewpoint.
This past Halloween weekend I stayed home with my wife and binge watched old horror films that included the suspense thriller, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, released in 1962. This film follows the twisted relationship of two aging sisters. Blanche, played by Joan Crawford, is paraplegic and wheelchair-confined, and Jane is a disgruntled and jealous former child star with a drinking problem, played by Bette Davis.  Both actresses give stunning performances in the twilight of their careers.  The film starkly depicts Jane’s horrific abuse of Blanche. As I watched the story unfold, I realized that it presents a portraya...

Enlightened Cream of Tomato Soup
Warning – The story behind this soup is a long one. A melodrama in three acts as it were. Act I It all started with a chicken that I purchased some weeks ago, in order to get a single chicken liver to use in a Bolognese ragu. After removing the liver from the little packet stuffed inside the chicken, I put the neck back in the cavity, put the chicken in the freezer and made the Bolognese. Act II Two weeks later, I took the chicken out of the freezer, put it in a pot with some veggies and water and cooked it, giving me a meat to make soft tacos for the a couple of dinners and lunches. And also a gorgeous...

Stop and smell the cadavers
Medical students are an odd bunch. At least in my day. Warning: The following may seem a little distasteful, violating the doctrine of proper decorum expected of medical professionals. I feel your anguish for those bent to the more sensitive side, but to sugar-coat a narrative only robs it of its essence. Editing metadata in trail camera images using R, magick and exiftool
I have a new hobby: camera traps, also known as trail cameras. Strapped to trees in my local bushland they sit in wait, firing automatically when triggered by a passing animal. Once in a while, something quite magical happens. The camera model I chose is the Campark T85 which for me, had the right combination of features and price point. One useful feature is the ability to transfer images and video to a phone wirelessly (albeit through a rather clunky phone app). Unfortunately, images retrieved in this way have one major flaw: an almost-complete absence of metadata. There is no GPS in the camera of course, but th...

Dr Margaret Vaux Has Exposed A Problem With Health Department / Medicare Technology!
