Connected Medical Devices —the Next Target for Ransomware Attacks
The following is a guest article by Ryan Witt, Healthcare Cybersecurity Leader at Proofpoint The Internet of Medical Things, or IoMT, is a deep web of interconnected devices that increasingly plays a vital role in care delivery. Unfortunately, these devices have also significantly enhanced healthcare’s cyber risk, and security researchers have raised alarms about the vulnerabilities of these devices for more than a decade. While we haven’t seen threat actors widely exploiting the vulnerabilities in the wild, it is only a matter of time—and the results of an event like an IoMT ransomware attack will be devastating to ...

The Truth About Medicare Advantage Saving Medicare
BY GEORGE HALVORSON We know from the current annual report from the Medicare trustees that Medicare Advantage is saving Medicare, and that Medicare will be a much stronger program as Medicare Advantage continues to grow. When we look at actual numbers from that report, we see that Medicare Advantage cost Medicare $403.3bn last year. The report shows that Medicare is growing 6.7% each year in total revenue. We see that Medicare Parts A and B have expense growth that slightly exceeds 8%, and that Medicare Advantage is projected to have expense growth of 4.2% for the year. That means we’re losing money from the ...

Better Health Care Tests, Faster
This article looks at some specific problems and solutions. Speeding up Test Development We’ve seen with COVID-19 how quickly a virus can evolve and how hard it is to design both tests and vaccinations that accommodate different variants. Virax Biolabs uses data from the World Health Organization and others to develop tests quickly. For instance, new viral variants tend to spread in the southern hemisphere before hitting the northern hemisphere in our Winter, so Virax can check existing data to prepare better tests for the North. The company is developing a T-cell diagnostics and profiling platform called Virax Immu...

On Investigating Presidents
Patrick G. EddingtonAs you probably have heard or otherwise know by now, the 37 ‐count indictment against former President Trump has beenreleased (WARNING: large file). I ’ve highlighted a number of sections in yellow that I think are particularly telling. For the benefit of those who are not fluent in Intelligence Community (IC) speak, I  offer the following translations regarding certain key acronyms contained in the indictment:HCS = Human intelligence Control System. Think confidential, foreign national sources.TK = Talent ‐Keyhole. That’s satellite imagery‐derived information. And I  doubt I need ...

15 Symptoms Of Low Blood Pressure To Watch Out For
Conclusion Low blood pressure, or hypotension, is often overshadowed by its counterpart, high blood pressure (hypertension), which receives more attention due to its perceived risks. However, it’s crucial to recognize that low blood pressure can have significant impacts on overall well-being and various organ systems. Fainting or loss of consciousness is a concerning symptom that may indicate a drop in blood flow to vital organs. Chest pain suggests inadequate blood supply to the heart, while shortness of breath indicates reduced oxygen supply to the lungs. Confusion or altered mental state can be a si...

A New Underground Market in E ‑Cigarettes Will Soon Begin Flourishing in Australia
Jeffrey A. SingerWriting in the Australian journalThe Quadranta  year and a half ago, I criticized the Australian government ’s plan to prohibit residents from purchasing e‑cigarettes without first getting a state‐licensed health care practitioner’s permission slip (aka, a prescription). I wrote:It makes no sense to require medical permission slips for consenting adults to ingest nicotine via e ‑cigarettes when doing so through combustible tobacco requires no such official nod. It makes even less sense when substances of equal or greater addictive potential are legally available without a prescription. ...

Representative Mooney Calls Out Fed ’s CBDC Pilots
Nicholas AnthonyLate last year, the Federal Reservecaught attention for its central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilot projects. Going beyond traditional research, the Federal Reserve contracted with the private sector to build potential CBDCs for the United States. As American Banker ’sJohn Adams reported at the time, “Even as debate in the U.S. rages over the utility of a digital dollar, work continues on the nuts and bolts of a potential American CBDC.”Therefore, with concerns about therisks of CBDCs high and the potential for such CBDC development to go awry, Representative Alex X. Mooney (R ‑WV)introduced a ...

eClinicalWorks Goes from 0 to 60 with AI Throughout Their Product
We’ve only seen a few times where something has dramatically changed the EHR product roadmap.  The first time this happened was when the HITECH act and associated $36 billion of stimulus money was included to stimulate adoption of EHR software.  In order to get access to that stimulus money, you had to use a certified EHR.  If you were an EHR company at this time, you quickly realized that you weren’t going to make any sales if you weren’t certified.  As such, the EHR product roadmap changed to ensure that you could meet the EHR certification and meaningful use requirements.  In fact, one could argue...
