The Biggest Trend You ’ve Probably Never Heard Of: A Status Report on 138 Healthcare ICOs
You’ve probably heard of Bitcoin, but we doubt you’ve heard of Dentacoin, MedTokens, or Curecoin. These are healthcare specific cryptocurrencies born from Initial Coin Offerings or ICOs. Over on The Health Care Blog, my colleague Robert Miller and I have written an article analyzing financial returns of 138 healthcare ICOs. The results are enlightening, but disappointing. Here are a few headlines: 122 healthcare ICOs are not exchange-listed 16 healthcare ICOs are listed on one or more exchanges Of these 16, 5 show a positive financial return since the date of their listing 2 show a positive return for CY 2018 to-da...

Controversy at MSK Cancer Center Regarding the Pathology Archive and Database
A controversy has erupted at prestigious cancer centerMemorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) about the granting of exclusive access to its surgical pathology slide archive and database to a startup company, Paige.AI. It was been revealed in a recent NYT article that the hospital holds an equity stake in the company. There is also participation in the startup by some hospital insiders (see:Sloan Kettering ’s Cozy Deal With Start-Up Ignites a New Uproar). Below is an excerpt from the article: An artificial intelligence start-up founded by three insiders at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center debuted with great...

The Biggest Trend You ’ve Probably Never Heard Of: A Status Report on 138 Healthcare ICOs
Discussion and Commentary  The first observation we’ll note is that there has been a substantial amount of healthcare ICO activity. However, we would label the overall performance of the healthcare ICOs as “disappointing”. Only 5 reported positive returns since the date of their listing and 2 in 2018 to-date. The overall ICO market has been declining since January 2018. Monthly funds raised by ICOs are down, and funding has shifted towards a few mega projects (like EOS and Telegram), big private sales, and smart contract platforms. During the bull market of 2017, healthcare ICOs greatly benefited from burgeoning pri...

Methuselah Fund Closes Initial Fundraising, Reports on Some Early Investments
I'm pleased to note that the Methuselah Fund has closed its first fundraising effort after hitting the target amount, obtaining the support of many long-standing members of our community. The fund is a mixed for-profit/non-profit vehicle that is intended to expand the investment efforts undertaken by the Methuselah Foundation in past years, helping promising lines of rejuvenation research to make the leap from laboratory to commercial development. At the present point in time there are few enough rejuvenation focused companies that doing this well requires extensive connections within the research community, and a willingn...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, September 10th 2018
In conclusion, HSC ageing is characterised by reduced self-renewal, myeloid and platelet HSC skewing, and expanded clonal haematopoiesis that is considered a preleukaemic state. The underlying molecular mechanisms seem to be related to increased oxidative stress due to ROS accumulation and DNA damage, which are influenced by both cell- and cell non-autonomous mechanisms such as prolonged exposure to infections, inflammageing, immunosenescence, and age-related changes in the HSC niche. Thus, HSC ageing seems to be multifactorial and we are only beginning to connect all the dots. The Price of Progress or the Waste...

The Price of Progress or the Waste of Regulation?
The average cost of delivering a new therapy from laboratory to clinic is increasing at a fast pace, more than doubling since the turn of the century according to some studies, to stand at $2.5 billion or more. This is not driven by the work of research and development becoming more expensive: if anything, the price of the tools of biotechnology is in free fall, even as capacity increases by orders of magnitude. Biotechnology has gone through, and is still going through, its own echoed version of the computing revolution of recent decades. A mix of advances in computational power and materials science means that a graduate...

A Cross-Party Win: Empowering Consumers Through Digital Health
By LYGEIA RICCIARDI Lygeia Ricciardi These days Americans are more politically divided than ever, disagreeing vehemently about everything from guns to the role of the press. Despite the distrust and inflammatory rhetoric, there are examples of cross-party, trans-Administration collaboration and success. Let’s celebrate them and be motivated by what happens we put differences aside and focus on shared long-term goals. Using digital technology to empower healthcare consumers is one example of a cross-party win, a still-developing success story that has been cultivated for more than a decade by the efforts of public and pri...

Are You Investing Enough in IT Security?
Would you put a $ 10 fence around a $ 100 horse? Does it make sense to put a $ 100 fence around a $ 10 horse? For the right security, you need to know what your horse is worth. The same concepts apply to protecting your data. What is your data worth? Ask Cottage Health , which had two data breaches, totaling 55,000 records., and settled a $ 4.1 million lawsuit with patients, then paid a $ 2 million California penalty. They were sued by their insurer, which wanted the $ 4.1 million settlement money back, after it discovered Cottage Health had not consistently implemented the security controls it claimed on its insur...

A Recent Profile of Unity Biotechnology and its Work on Senolytic Therapies
It was only partially in jest that I recently noted Unity Biotechnology as a financial institution with a sideline in rejuvenation research, specifically the targeted destruction of senescent cells. The principals have raised a truly enormous amount of funding in the past year and a half, and recently filed for IPO. They have not yet presented even preliminary human data. Typically the ordering of these matters tends to be at least a little different; there are some raised eyebrows in the community. But if the Unity Biotechnology founders can raise the funds and use them well to advance the state of the art, then more powe...

5 Reasons Why Artificial Intelligence Won ’t Replace Physicians
Hype and fears surround artificial intelligence taking jobs in healthcare. Will it render physicians obsolete? Will it replace the majority of medical professionals? The Medical Futurist decided to set things straight. Here are five fundamental reasons why A.I. won’t replace doctors and never will. The medical community should not fall for the fearmongering around A.I. At the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, automation and digitization are turning the job market upside down. Many fear that robots, A.I., and automation, in general, will take their jobs without alternatives. The same anxieties emerged in healthcar...
