Responding to domestic and family violence in resource-constrained contexts: a case study on rural policing innovations in Melanesia
This article discusses how police responses are coordinated to address domestic and family violence (DFV) and provides a critical reflection on both internal responses and the complexities of multi-partner operations beyond urban spaces. This article draws on the findings from a stakeholder engagement focus group with 20 participants from four Melanesian countries – Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu – to provide insight into policing innovations in rural contexts. There is a need for improved multisector partnerships, increased police presence and greater reliance on indigenous strategies to improve...

Authority in tobacco control in Pacific Small Island Developing States: a qualitative study of multisectoral tobacco governance in Fiji and Vanuatu
Conclusions Our results highlight the need for terms of engagement with the tobacco industry to enable governments to implement multisectoral tobacco control measures. Expanding assistance on tobacco control among government and civil society actors and increasing messaging about the impact of economic, trade and agricultural practices on health are essential to help SIDS implement the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Triage implementation in resource-limited emergency departments: sharing tools and experience from the Pacific region
AbstractAccording to the World Health Organization ’s (WHO) Emergency Care Systems Framework, triage is an essential function of emergency departments (EDs). Thispractice innovation article describes four strategies that have been used to support implementation of the WHO-endorsed Interagency Integrated Triage Tool (IITT) in the Pacific region, namely needs assessment, digital learning, public communications and electronic data management.Using a case study from Vila Central Hospital in Vanuatu, a Pacific Small Island Developing State, we reflect on lessons learned from IITT implementation in a resource-limited ED. In pa...

Type 2 Diabetes Prevalence, Control and Management within Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu: A Scoping Review with a Systematic Approach
CONCLUSION: The prevalence, control, and management of T2D varied between Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Significant gaps remain in the data describing these domains; however, there are clearly targetable areas for future research and diabetes management programs.PMID:38258764 | DOI:10.2174/0115733998260306231025151814 (Source: Current Diabetes Reviews)

Algal outbreaks around the world are crowding out corals
About 11 years ago, Peter Edmunds noticed small dark red splotches on the reefs off the Virgin Islands that he’d been surveying for decades. The culprits, red algae that form a crust on underwater surfaces such as coral, were previously known to grow only in small patches, tucked away in crevices among the reefs. Since he first noticed them, they’ve “just gone gangbusters,” says the marine biologist from California State University, Northridge. And not just at his study sites. Edmunds and colleagues report today in Current Biology that these algae are spreading rapidly in the Caribbean Sea ...

A pooled analysis of temporal trends in the prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep loss among adolescents aged 12 –15 years across 29 countries
ConclusionTrends in the prevalence of anxiety-induced sleep loss in adolescents varied significantly across different countries. Generally, a stable trend was observed in 21 of the 29 countries surveyed. Our study provides data that can aid policymakers in establishing country-specific strategies for reducing anxiety-induced sleep loss in adolescents. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

'They're not as MSM, they're a < em > bufta < /em > ': using the categories 'men who have sex with men' and 'transgender' as technologies in Vanuatu
Cult Health Sex. 2023 Jul 21:1-16. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2023.2234422. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn Vanuatu, the use of the terms such as 'men who have sex with men' (MSM) and 'transgender' has increased over the past decade. This paper draws on twenty months ethnographic research in Port Vila, the country's capital, to analyse what happens on the ground when MSM and transgender categories are taken up to identify people or to narrate the self. The focus is on who uses these terms, in what ways they are experienced, and what is rendered visible (or not) by their use. This research departs from approaches framing 'non-h...

Change in global burden of unintentional drowning from 1990 to 2019 and its association with social determinants of health: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
Conclusions The global burden of unintentional drowning significantly declined in the past three decades, and the improvement of SDHs such as GDP per capita and health spending mainly contributed to the decrease. Our findings indicate that improvement of SDHs is critical for drowning prevention and control. (Source: BMJ Open)

Viruses Associated with Acute Conjunctivitis in Vanuatu
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Jan 16:tpmd220600. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.22-0600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu, a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Patients presenting to one of two Vanuatu health centers with presumed infectious conjunctivitis were eligible if symptom onset was within 14 days of screening. Conjunctival and anterior nasal swabs were obtained and subjected to unbiased RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify DNA and RNA viruses. For samples collected from May to November 202...
