Blast injury: Impact to the cornea
Exp Eye Res. 2024 Apr 25:109915. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2024.109915. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVisual disorders are common even after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or blast exposure. The cost of blast-induced vision loss in civilians, military personnel, and veterans is significant. The visual consequences of blasts associated with TBI are elusive. Active military personnel and veterans report various ocular pathologies including corneal disorders post-combat blasts. The wars and conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, etc. have increased the number of corneal and ocular disorders significantly among military...

Impact of flight route changes on cosmic ray exposure: consequences of the conflict between Ukraine and the Russian federation
Radiat Environ Biophys. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s00411-024-01066-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work investigates the impact on cosmic ray exposures to aircrew due to changing flight routes operated in the context of the recent conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. All analyses were done based on Paris-Tokyo and Tokyo-Paris flights taken as examples, and differences in radiation exposures were quantified by comparing the situation before and after the beginning of the conflict. Regarding space weather scenarios, a quiet solar period and an extreme solar event (ground level enhancement (GLE) 5) were ...

Systematicity of receiving mental health care predicts better subjective well-being of Ukrainians during the second year of the Russian invasion
This study aims to develop and test a multivariable psychosocial prediction model of subjective well-being in Ukrainian adults (n = 1,248) 1.5 years after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The research design followed the “Transparent reporting of a multivariable prediction model for individual prognosis or diagnosis” checklist. The online survey combined a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics and specifics of living in wartime, as well as validated self-reported inventories: The Modified BBC Subjective Well-being Scale, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire – Version 2 and Connor–Davidson Resilienc...

Effect of changing the radiation dose range on the in vitro cytogenetic dose response to gamma-rays
CONCLUSIONS: The classical LQ model with fixed coefficients appears to have limited applicability for cytogenetic dosimetry at radiation doses >5 Gy due to the saturation of the dose response. Different response of the LQ coefficients to the changes of the dose range must be considered during the DRC construction. Proper selection of minimum and maximum dose in calibration experiments makes it possible to improve the goodness of fit of the LQ DRC.PMID:38647504 | DOI:10.1080/09553002.2024.2338511 (Source: International Journal of Radiation Biology)

Anxiety and depressive personality disorders in the modern world
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 19;246:104285. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104285. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study's significance lies in the multitude of challenges facing individuals today, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, military conflicts like the war in Ukraine, and the escalating rates of cancer morbidity and mortality. These factors contribute to the onset of anxiety and depressive disorders, disrupting various aspects of individuals' mental functioning and social interactions. Addressing these disorders effectively necessitates a comprehensive approach, combining pharmacological interventions with psychotherape...

IJERPH, Vol. 21, Pages 508: Cognitive and Relational Processes Associated to Mental Health in Italian High School Students during COVID-19 and Russian & ndash;Ukrainian War Outbreaks
This study explored the mental health of 215 Italian adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent outbreak of the Russian–Ukrainian war. By administering a set of questionnaires, several cognitive and emotional variables were investigated, including core belief violation, meaning attribution to the pandemic and war, attachment, and emotion regulation, social media addiction, and relationships with significant others and teachers. We conducted some descriptive, mean difference, correlational, and predictive analyses that revealed a significant association between core belief violation caused by ...

Daring ‘James Bond’ mission to drill Antarctic ices cores could reveal future of sea level rise
The helicopter hovered overhead, whipping up snow. Shielding his face, Peter Neff grabbed the dangling cargo load and guided it to the Antarctic ice. The helicopter sped back to the South Korean icebreaker RV Araon , 20 kilometers away, to fetch more gear. One trip down, 17 more to go, thought Neff, a polar glaciologist at the University of Minnesota (UM) Twin Cities. Time was ticking away on this day in January. In the best-case scenario, Neff and his team would have just 10 days to drill ice cores on Canisteo, a peninsula on the west coast of Antarctica—and a blizzard was already looming. Ever...

New initiative aims to bolster funding for scientists in war-torn Ukraine
WASHINGTON, D.C.— For astrophysicist David Spergel, teaching at a summer school about data science in August 2023 in Ukraine was a “surreal” experience. At times, utterly normal—smart students and collegial dinners in the charming cobblestoned city of Lviv. But punctuated by sirens and cellphone alerts warning of Russian missile attacks that compelled attendees to seek refuge in bomb shelters. Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation , started to think there had to be something more the West could do to aid his Ukrainian colleagues. Eight months later, that idea has blossomed into the Scienc...
