Widespread dermatophytosis in a healthy adolescent: the first report of multidrug-resistant Trichophyton indotineae infection in the UAE
We describe here the case of a boy with widespread, extremely pruritic, inflammatory dermatophytosis affecting his face, neck, trunk, and extremities, unsuccessfully treated for months with oral terbinafine and fluconazole and a range of topical antimycotics. Qualitative polymerase chain reaction of skin scrapings from his lesions identified a T. interdigitale complex fungus, highly probably T. indotineae due to conspecificity and antifungal resistance. Oral itraconazole, administered over 8 weeks, cleared the infection. Because the patient had not traveled outside the United Arab Emirates for months before the infection b...

Spectrum of genetic variants in bilateral sensorineural hearing loss
Conclusion: Understanding the genetic basis of HL provides insight for the clinical diagnosis of hearing impairment cases through the utilization of next-generation sequencing (NGS). Our findings contribute to the knowledge of the heterogeneous genetic profile of HL, especially in a population with a high rate of consanguineous marriage in the Arab population. Solar-powered rainstorms, disease-spreading tornadoes, and more stories you may have missed this week
Why are scientists turning neurons blue? Did the ancient Romans get high? And what can mice teach us about erectile dysfunction? Check out the answers below in some of our favorite selections from Science ’s daily newsletter, Science Adviser . Watching neurons die—for science! Bright green. Dim blue. Black. That’s the tragic story of a neuron dying in the spinal cord of a live zebrafish, its inner light flickering off as fluorescent molecules that mirror cell activity fade and blink out. It may seem like a morbid experiment, but research like this—reported last w...

Diagnostic Accuracy of Cerebrospinal Fluid Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction Panel Testing in Patients With Suspected Central Nervous System Infections: A Multi-Center Study in the United Arab Emirates
Conclusion CSF mPCR panel is a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of CNS infections among all age groups in the UAE. Routine use of CSF mPCR panels can decrease healthcare costs by reducing the length of stay and can also aid antibiotic stewardship efforts by reducing antibiotic overuse in patients with viral CSF infections. CSF culture and mPCR complement each other by identifying CNS pathogens in patients with prior antibiotic exposure who would otherwise be missed if relying on CSF culture alone. However, concomitant CSF culture samples should be sent to avoid missing unusual CNS pathogens.P...

Oil pollution threatens Persian Gulf marine life | Science
The Persian Gulf is a shallow sea located between Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. These nine countries possess 50% of the world's oil reserves (1) and produce about 25% of the oil consumed globally (2). The extensive oil and industrial activities, including numerous oil spills between 1980 and 2020 (1, 2), have led to substantial pollution and severely damaged marine life in the Persian Gulf (3). Given that preserving the quality of the marine environment is essential to the social fabric of life and to the economic success in the region (2), governments must pri...

Prevalence and risk factors for metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia, schizoaffective, and bipolar disorder
CONCLUSION: Our study found that around one in three patients had MetS irrespective of the three diagnoses. Some variables were significant predictors for MetS. Our findings were consistent with other studies and warrant the need for regular screening and management of abnormal metabolic parameters.Key pointsThere is no statistical difference between schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with regards to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome.Fasting blood glucose levels and abnormally elevated triglycerides were significant predictors of metabolic syndrome.Screening of metabolic parameters is importan...
