Effective antiviral prophylaxis and therapy for opportunistic human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in transplant recipients and other immunocompromised hosts has long relied mainly on ganciclovir and its oral prodrug valganciclovir, with foscarnet and cidofovir in secondary roles.
