What to do on Transplant Sub-i?
Hello, I am doing a Sub-i in transplant surgery in August... but I don't really know what I am doing in surgery still. I never rotated through a transplant service during my 3rd year. Does anyone have any experience doing a Transplant Sub-i that could share some tips with me on what I should do on the rotation(of course work hard)? Also, on a more general note, what is expected of a Sub-i? I still struggle to put together an assessment and plan, as well as presenting patients in a quick... What to do on Transplant Sub-i? Entering surgery with risk of arthritis
After taking a 23andme dna test, I had two genes found that are both risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis. This increases my risk for rheumatoid Arthritis. With that said, I have no family history of it. I am interested in a surgical subspecialty, but given that result, would it be unwise to enter that field knowing my risk? Transplant Surgery in the Military
Questions about Transplant Surgery sub-specialty in the Army: 1) I know the Army does have a Transplant Surgery fellowship, but so far I have not been able to get any info on the number of spots they have, or whether this is a civilian or military fellowship (partnership between UMB and Walter Reed, so is it civ or mil?). 2) If, after repaying your dues to the Army (6 years for a gen. surg. residency), is it nearly impossible to gain entrance to a civ fellowship, i.e. are you considered... MKSAP 16 question: 55-yo awaiting kidney transplant (ESRD per lupus). Kidney ultrasound reveals a complex-appearing mass suspicious for a renal neoplasm in the right kidney. Which of the following is the most appropriate imaging study to perform next? A) CT with contrast (51%) [correct answer] B) Intravenous pyelography C) MRI with gadolinium D) Positron emission tomography (30%) [wrong answer that I chose] So I understand that CT is the better radiological modality to characterize said... 55-yo, awaiting transplant, suspect renal neoplasm, next step? Will this Count as Clinical Experience
I am trying to see if this falls under " Clinical Experience" or not, and are these hrs enough for ECs with LM=71. 1) Shadow a Nephrologist in a Hospital and came in contact with patients daily. Even observe a kidney Transplant in the Surgery room. ( hrs 80+) 2) Shadow an Ophthalmologist in an Eye Hospital and came in contact with Patients. (hrs 40+ ) 3) Shadow a Hepatologist in a Hospital ICU. (hrs 40+) 4) Volunteer in a Hospital and work with Patients in moving them to different... In which surgical fields can you operate exclusively on kids?
Hi y'all, quick question: I know that some surgical specialties/subspecialties don't have pediatric patient populations large enough to allow a peds-only practice (e.g. trauma surgery, vascular surgery), so I'm wondering which ones allow you to work exclusively in peds. Updated lists: Yes (I think) Ophtho Neurosurgery General Ortho CT/congenital Urology ENT Plastics Transplant No (I think) Trauma Vascular SurgOnc Unsure: Oral/maxillofacial Surgical Critical Care... Why is intestine transplant surgery so darn pricey?
I was going through some lists of expensive operation and I found out that Intestine transplant costs around 1,2million dollars. The fact that it costs more than lungs or hearth transplant really impressed me but why its so pricey? And how often is operation like this done? I was looking for it on google but aparently Iam not asking the right questions or something (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Face Transplant Surgery
All, but one, of the lead surgeons in facial transplant cases, Siemionow etc, are plastic surgeons. Residency trained in 5 year general surgeons + 2/3 year plastic surgery residency. (Devauchelle from France is an OMF surgeon, but he's the only non plastic program lead.) Wouldn't an ENT residency followed by a 2/3 year plastic surgery residency be better training for the vastly complex facial reconstruction required for face transplants; compared to thoracotomies and bowel resections... Pulmonary sub-specialty fellowships
Is it reasonable to look into sub-specialty fellowships like PH or lung transplant pretty early on if there is even an inkling of interest? Pretty stoked to start my PCCM fellowship so this may be premature, but I am leaning heavily in the direction of academic pulmonology with a heavy sub-specialty focus. It seems there are a few places that offer additional training in PH or lung transplant -- are these necessary or recommended for pursuit of an academic career in those fields? During my... *Opinion Survey* Importance of transplant cases in training - resident/fellow input appreciated
Background: 4th year trying to create match list. It seems like hearts are straight forward and the experience can be replaced with any cardiac case using cardiopulmonary bypass. Same with lung in that one-lung ventilation is required for a lot of thoracic cases. In my experience, liver transplant management is the most unique/difficult, and thus harder to replace, what with the coagulopathy, AB derangements, and massive transfusion. Individually those challenges can be found in most sick... *Opinion Survey* Importance of transplant cases in training - resident/fellow input appreciated (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Virginia Mason
I know it's a VERY strong and reputable anesthesiology program but had a few questions since their website seems to be pretty bare bones. - Do they do liver transplants/other large transplant cases? - Are many residents able to sit for the basic echo boards at the end of residency? - Moonlighting opportunities?
