Transplant vs Oncology
Hello everyone. I'm Danielle, and am in college, looking ahead to MS. I'm currently waffling between Transplant Surgery and Surgical Oncology. What are the pros and cons of each? Does one have easier residency slots to come by? Is it possible, or even advisable, to combine them? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Who wants another Great Breast Cancer Debate?
71 yo, history of single-lung transplant with T1N1 triple negative breast cancer. immediate surgery (ie no neoadjuvant therapy). s/p full ax dissection (11 nodes) - final path with single positive node and associated ECE. Would anyone treat axilla in this situation? If it matters the transplanted lung is on the right and the cancer was on the left. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Med-Peds to pediatric cardiology to adult heart failure fellowship?
Hi all, I have what I assume is a somewhat unique goal related to future training. Currently med/peds trained and board certified in both fields. I am in a pediatric cardiology fellowship and am interested in pursuing an adult cardiology sub-specialty training program- specifically heart failure/ transplant. Coming from a medium sized program with a small transplant and ventricular assist device population, I am interested in developing some expertise in both transplant and VADs and... Multi-visceral transplant surgeons: interested in becoming one, tell me what I need to know
I have been interested in transplant surgery for a long time. I've done some clinical research in the field, rotated through transplant as a 3rd year elective rotation, and have a personal desire to become a transplant surgeon. Lately, I've been considering the possibility of trying to specialize in multi-visceral transplant patients. What are the things I need to know about caring for multi-visceral transplant patients and performing multi-vis operations? What are the job prospects for... ENT Chances M4
Hi there, I know, another one of these... Dual degree masters 245 Step 1 265 Step 2 5 pubs/posters in CT and Transplant surgery B in Surgery A- in IM Talked to my home dept and they said I might be able to match somewhere but were hedging and weren't very helpful. Any insights? I can try to get a case report or 2 done and signing up for 1 away and will try to crush my home elective. Would I have to dual apply another specialty (Rads) or plan a research fellowship/delay graduation Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Please help me look less dumb!!!
So my research mentor (a transplant surgeon) has offered in the past to let me accompany him for the entire procurement --> transplant process if I wanted to. I have loved my research and am interested in the field, but most of my experience is clinic based from consenting and working with the human subjects. I definitely want to take him up on his offer this summer because I want to learn more and network. Of note, I have no idea how involved he will let me be. I have a bit OR experience... Applying to multiple surgical fellowships
Does anyone have a clear idea whether this is possible with certain fellowships? For example surg onc/transplant are both with NRMP and HPB/Minimally invasive are on the fellowship council. The rank list and matching dates for both organizations are identical. Do they do this purposefully to limit applying to multiple fellowships? As someone who is interested in hepatobilliary surgery there are multiple ways to get there with surgonc/hpb/transplant fellowships (all with their pros and... Transplant Surgery
I've recently developed an interest in transplant surgery, and while I'm familiar with the overall pro's and con's, I wanted to start a discussion on SDN to see what people's experiences and impressions are. I'll start. Pro's: Excellent surgical training/abilities. Giving a patient a new organ brings a unique sense of gratification Patients are greateful (at least immediately post-op). Con's: Lifestyle (although I wonder if more academic transplant surgeons have better call schedules... Transplant Surgery (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transplant surgeon lifestyle question
Hi all- I've been dating a great guy who is currently in his final year of a surgical residency. He's going to do his fellowship in transplant surgery and I have been wondering if there is a significant difference in the amount of time he'll be spending at the hospital during his fellowship compared to residency. Thanks in advance for your input. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
