AI and the Human Touch: Embracing a Symbiotic Future
The following is a guest article by Ed Watal, Founder and Principal at Intellibus It seems as if every news outlet, talking head, and business influencer has been talking about AI — and for good reason. Though artificial intelligence is not a new concept, the latest innovations in what the technology can do for business, news, media, art, and finance are taking the world by storm. From ChatGPT to AI-assisted medical care, there isn’t a single industry that hasn’t been touched by AI in some way — causing some to wonder if the human element of business, work, and life itself may be in jeopardy. However, human beings ...

Obstacles to Healthcare Training Data Accuracy and How to Overcome Them
One of the biggest problems with AI solutions in healthcare right now is getting quality data that you can use to train your AI models.  When you train an AI model using generic data, it is like a child trying to teach another child.  For the AI models to be effective, they require the highest quality data including meta data that helps the model to understand the context of the data.  This is particularly true in healthcare which has extremely complex data models, superfluous data, and unique terminology. The good news for healthcare IT companies is that there are companies who can help them clean up and annotate their...

Generative AI for Mental Wellness: Balancing the Potential, Cybersecurity, and Ethics
This article is solely the opinions of Srija and Aryyama and is in no way representative of the viewpoints of their employers. Mental health is one of the major challenges in today’s digitally-driven world. GenAI-powered Chatbots can provide real-time tailored replies, and a calming virtual space to those who require assistance, thanks to advanced algorithms. While they can democratize the availability of psychological care, the accompanying ethical concerns and cybersecurity issues are key aspects of this ever-evolving setting. GenAI can narrow the disparity between the growing need for psychological help and the constr...

Lifestyle Changes
I looked at my last blog post. It was from June 28, 2021. I had just met my new primary care physician. Since then we had made slow changes to my health. I tried to eat better and exercise more. It has been a journey of trying to implement what I preach. The progress was slow. Last year, to help my physical activity endeavors (and because I have a huge interest in martial arts), I decided to start training at a local Karate school. The school I attend teaches Enshin Karate a style that traces it’s roots back through Ashihara and Kyokushin. Shortly after that time I noticed my Apple Watch was notifying me abou...

What Should You Think About When Migrating Existing Healthcare Systems and Applications to the Cloud?
Moving is a very daunting task. The longer you live somewhere the more stuff you have to pack up into boxes and then unpack in your new place. And you’ve kept this stuff for so long that you’re attached to it and don’t want to get rid of anything. Moving your organization to a new system is just the same. All of your data and information is stored away in other systems and applications. And while those systems and applications may not be perfect, your staff have used them for so long that they’re used to them and might be resistant to change. Tragically, for both moving in our own lives and moving o...

Understanding RNA-Modifying Enzymes: Q & A With Jeffrey Mugridge
Credit: Courtesy of Jeffrey Mugridge. “One of the best aspects of research is the excitement of discovery, being the first person in the world to know a small detail about the system you’re studying,” says Jeffrey Mugridge, Ph.D., an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Delaware in Newark. We talked with Dr. Mugridge about how a pet store job sparked his early interest in science, why he decided to change his career trajectory after graduate school, and what he believes is key to being a successful researcher. Q: How did you first become interested in science? A: ...

“Doomscrolling” – Call the doctor!
by MIKE MAGEE Exactly 1 year ago, mental health experts alerted the medical world to their version of an assessment scale for yet another new condition – “doomscrolling.” As defined in the article, “Constant exposure to negative news on social media and news feeds could take the form of ‘doomscrolling’ which is commonly defined as a habit of scrolling through social media and news feeds where users obsessively seek for depressing and negative information.” No one can deny a range of legitimate concerns. Faced with continued background noise from the pandemic, add global warming, renegade AI, and...

A man in his 60s with syncope and ST depression. What does the ECG mean?
Written by Sean Trostel MD, peer reviewed by Meyers, Smith, Grauer, etc.A man in his 60s with a history of severe alcohol use disorder and epidural abscess on long-term ciprofloxacin presented to the emergency department after an episode of syncope while standing in line at a grocery store. He did not have chest pain. Here is his triage ECG:   What do you think? My interpretation:Sinus rhythm, normal QRS, widespread wavy ST depression leading into late T/U-waves with very prolonged QT.
