Exercise Beneficially Alters Polarization of Microglia in the Brain
Regular moderate exercise remains one of the most beneficial interventions when it comes to slowing the progression of degenerative aging, if balancing effect size against volume of supporting data. This isn't where we'd like to be! Biotechnology is capable of so very much more, but progress is slow, and robust assessment of new therapies across large populations slower still. Exercise introduces sweeping changes in cellular biochemistry and the function of higher level systems in the body, which makes it an ongoing challenge for the research community to understand exactly how it produces benefits. As is usually the case,...

Self-management skills that are not top of the pops
When I carried out my informal survey of the pain self-management skills people had used in the past week, there were no real surprises. Movement, activity management (pacing – and I will have more to say about this in a couple of weeks!), sleep, attention management and doing something fun were all at the top of the list. Others were lower down and while they don’t get to shine as much, I’m not so sure they are as seldom used as this wee survey suggests. At the bottom of the list is having hands-on treatment for relaxation or to feel good. OK, perhaps understandable because the whole ongoing debat...

How Wolters Kluwer Health Keeps Large Language Models and AI Honest
Wolters Kluwer Health offers a service called UpToDate, consulted by doctors around the world to help their clinical decision making. In this video, chief medical officer Peter Bonis explains how they are working to add a large language model (LLM), the technology currently popular in generative AI. Bonis also offers a broad overview of trends in digital health. The impetus behind UpToDate is the explosion of information in medicine. No one can keep up with the discoveries in each field. And there are intriguing—if currently less trustworthy—additions from self-monitoring devices, pharma clinics, and predictive analyti...

New G-RISE and IMSD Funding Opportunities and Upcoming Webinar
We’re pleased to announce that the notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for the Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (G-RISE; PAR-24-032) and Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD; PAR-24-031) programs have been reissued. These NOFOs aim to strengthen research training environments and promote broader participation in the biomedical research workforce by expanding the pool of well-trained scientists earning a Ph.D., for example, encouraging the inclusion of individuals from underrepresented groups (see Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity). The new NOFOs have some...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Human Resource Management
The previous articles in this series discussed what kinds of programmers do well and enjoy working in a digital health company. This final article looks at some important aspects of culture and how to cultivate the developers you have. Allow Programmer Creativity, With Sensitivity Several of my respondents talked about giving professionals flexibility and autonomy. But programmers need to be sensitive to the unique needs of patients and clinicians. Health care is far different from most of the other industries they’re used to working in. As Anmol Madan, co-founder and CEO of RadiantGraph, puts it, software engineer...

Award-Winning Safety Training Videos Showcase Inclusivity in the Lab
Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU’s) Center on Health Disparities and safety and risk management department in Richmond teamed up to develop a series of six lab safety training videos with supplemental funding to their NIGMS-funded Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) program. The videos cover topics such as safety culture, biosafety, chemical safety, and emergency response, but what sets them apart is how they showcase diversity and inclusion in the lab. The first video in the safety training series describes the importance of maintaining positive safety culture, which includes people’s p...

How Digital Health Companies Attract Software Engineers: Goals
Companies creating health care applications, digital fitness solutions, and other health-related software compete fiercely for technical staff. An article by Developers.Net cites various statistics suggesting that demand outstrips the supply of programmers by hundreds of thousands of people. Other disciplines (such as needed for data science and machine learning) are also hotly contested. Anmol Madan, co-founder and CEO of RadiantGraph, says that tech experts might need to accept a pay cut to work for a small digital health company. Startups just can’t compete with major employers such as Google on salary and benefit...

How medicine ’ s demanding training took my sleep away
I, like many of my peers in medicine, am a terrible sleeper. And it’s no wonder, after all. I spent the better part of my twenties and thirties training my brain not to give in to sleep when I needed it. Then, in the rare hours I did sleep, I was forced to wake at Read more… How medicine’s demanding training took my sleep away originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Physicians turn feelings of frustration and powerlessness into purpose and hope
Every physician has a story to tell, about their medical training, about their clinical work. Every story is unique. Simultaneously, there are common shared themes about the joys and the difficulties. These experiences are universal, regardless of gender, specialty, or geographic location. I asked two physicians, a female ER doctor on the East Coast in Read more… Physicians turn feelings of frustration and powerlessness into purpose and hope originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Florida GOP Chair Christian Ziegler, husband of Moms For Liberty cofounder, accused of sexual battery by alleged menage a trois lover
Please folks, I am totally in agreement that Hamas is an unacceptable threat and that the organization must be neutralized. That does not mean that the Israeli military has the right to indiscriminately massacre civilians. Evidently some of you support genocide, as long as the right people are being exterminated. Yes, yes, at this point it ' s only an allegation, it has not been substantiated. But the headline is irresistible, and we know this happens all the time, from Roy Cohn to Larry Craig to Ted Haggard. The harder these people thump their Bibles and persecute homosexuals, the better the odds that they are exactl...
