FDA Acknowledges Shortage of Breathing Tubes Due to Sterilization Shutdown
FDA acknowledged on Friday that there is a temporary shortage of a type of tracheostomy tube manufactured by Smiths Medical, a device that many high-risk kids and some adults depend on to help them breathe.
As MD+DI reported on April 9, the shortage of the Bivona trach tubes is the direct result of a sterilization plant in Illinois being shut down. At that time, FDA had not yet commented on this shortage, although the agency had warned of potential shortages due to the closure and the planned closure of a similar facility in Michigan.

The February shutdown of an ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization plant has produced the first temporary medical device shortage, according to the FDA.
The device in short supply is the Bivona tracheostomy tube manufactured by Smiths Medical and used by many pediatric patients. Last month FDA warned of potential medical device shortages amid a shutdown of facilities that use a gas called ethylene oxide (EtO) to sterilize medical devices. The situation is already impacting children who use Smiths Medical's Bivona tracheostomy tubes.

Many more children and infants are having tracheostomies placed. Decannulation rates for these children are low due to concomitant complex chronic disease such as neurological, pulmonary and congenital heart diseases.
