Mayo Clinic Arizona IM training program - resident experience
Wanted to let applicants know about the training experience in this program. They do have the Mayo name and that is about it. The variety of cases seen is pretty poor. Just a lot of zebras. Bread and butter cases are not frequent. ICU rotation sucks. You are just a note monkey. Just putting in notes for the patients. Do not get to do enough procedures. They call themselves the safest teaching hospital in the county. You get only one stick for central line placement / lumbar puncture, after... ACOM and Its Affiliation with SAMC
Hey all, I have a question regarding ACOM... in reading through various other posts, I noticed a lot of people have cited ACOM's association with SAMC to be an advantage or one of the reasons why they chose to attend the school. I was wondering what exactly is the advantage of being associated with a teaching hospital? Does it provide unique opportunities for students compared to other schools that may not have a teaching hospital nearby? It is easier to gain hands-on patient care experience... Would you go to a "teaching hospital" for your parent?
So yeah - sitting here with my mom at University of Iowa and they just told me they accidentally severed her accessory nerve during surgery to remove and biopsy lymph nodes. Now she can't lift her arm well so we have a new f''ing problem we have do deal with. I thought I'd post here and see what med students think - would you send your mom to a teaching hospital where it's not 100% certain who's doing the surgery? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

North Shore/LIJ Internal Medicine Program
Anyone familiar with this program? I hear they just recently merged, and will become a teaching hospital affiliated with the new Hofstra School of Medicine. They have 20 categorical + 20 prelim spots per yr. Surprisingly there were almost no FMGs even in the categorical program. Undergoing a lot of curriculum changes too (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ophthalmology versus Internal Med
I am a third year medical student deciding between ophtho and internal med. Both are good fields and I am torn. I thought I would always do medicine but did not like my rotation. I can easily identify with the medicine residents at my teaching hospitals; I enjoyed my ophtho rotation and found it very refreshing. Ophtho: Pros: Great lifestyle, better compensation, clean field with little b***s*** to deal with, ability to do procedures; feel like you made a difference in people's... Low GPA. Stay at Undergrad to Raise GPA or Start Anew at a Different School
I have lots of details but the question comes down to this. I have to start over with about 2 new years of undergrad work to raise GPA, show a new trend because last time I was at my undergrad a few years ago, my cum. gpa hit rock bottom. Life is different and better now. Went as a non degree last semester and did really well with my lowest grade being a B+ If it were you. Would you go back to your undergrad (great state school, teaching hospital and med school attached) where your gpa... Low GPA. How to score an externship where you have no connections?
I was wondering if any senior students/residents/attendings had some advice on how you would go about getting an externship at a place where you don't yet know anyone. I'm interested in doing residency training one day in Florida and wanted to see how I could go arranging an externship at a teaching hospital (i.e UF Gainesville/Jacksonville) for the summer of 2017 for a few weeks after OMS-I. It'd be a great educational opportunity and would be a good chance to network as well. It's a years... How to score an externship where you have no connections? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

513 MCAT - 3.29 cGPA - 3.24 sGPA
Good morning, everyone. MCAT scores are in, so, after several years of lurking, I can finally ask your help on my chances/school list. I'm a nontraditional Florida resident with ties to Wisconsin and Michigan, so I am crossing my fingers that I get a bite from those states. Background: I'm a 28-year old ICU nurse at a massive trauma center/teaching hospital in Florida. I have an Associate's Degree but should receive my Bachelor's by the end of this year with a good upward trend (only... 513 MCAT - 3.29 cGPA - 3.24 sGPA (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How Difficult Is It For A Foreign MD To Find A Residency Match?
I have a student who is a physician in another country who has not been able to find a residency match in the U.S., despite all of his applications to various teaching hospitals. He is willing to move and work in any state. He has two letters of recommendation from a medical school professor and from his attending physician in his country. Any ideas, or should he give up his dream of becoming a doctor here? Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

New MD schools on the residency interview trail
So, I heard from an M4 friend at a new MD school that residency program directors straight up said to her, "You look great on paper, but we simply don't know what kind of residents your school produces." From another at a different school I heard, "Your school has been a great teaching hospital for years. Why not stay there?" I'm curious if anyone else has heard reports like this? Any other details people can offer? How bad is the upward climb from schools without an established... New MD schools on the residency interview trail (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prospective GEM student, with many questions!
Hello. Good day to you all, and I hope you are settled in your seat because this will be a long post! Well, this is the third time I have seriously contemplated studying medicine, and this third time, I have decided, will be the ultimate pivotal moment where I either commit fully to the quest or put it to bed forever. No half measures. Naturally, I would rather do the 'commit fully' bit, but for that I need your help. I need to allay a number of fears that could persuade me that a medial career is not for the good of me and my family. My situation is this. I am 31 years old with an arts degree, and I have a wife and 2 c...
