Effectiveness of pharmacist-led medication reconciliation on medication errors at hospital discharge and healthcare utilization in the next 30 days: a pragmatic clinical trial
Transitions of care often lead to medication errors and unnecessary healthcare utilization. Medication reconciliation has been repeatedly shown to reduce this risk. However, the great majority of evidence is limited to the provision of medication reconciliation within clinical trials and countries with well-established clinical pharmacy. Thus, this pragmatic, prospective, controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of routine pharmacist-led medication reconciliation compared to standard care on medication errors and unplanned healthcare utilization in adult general medical patients hospitalized in a teaching hospital in S...

Short-term chemotherapy-related complications and undernutrition in children diagnosed with cancer at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana: A prospective cohort study
by Nihad Salifu, Catherine I. Segbefia, Yakubu Alhassan, Lorna A. Renner, Edem M. A. Tette Undernutrition in children with cancer is associated with complications during cancer therapy. The study objective was to determine the association between specific anthropometric parameters and short-term chemotherapy-related complications and mortality. This was a hospital-based, prospective coh ort study of children, age ≤12 years, with a new cancer diagnosis at the Paediatric Oncology Unit, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana. Socio-demographic information, cancer characteristics and anthropometric measurements were obtained at ...

Trends in the use of neuromuscular blocking agents, reversal agents and neuromuscular transmission monitoring: a single-centre retrospective cohort study
ConclusionOur data demonstrate that the implementation of NMT monitoring with automatic recording coincides with a gradual increase in the (documented) use of NMT monitoring and an increased use of sugammadex with a more precise dose. Factors associated with sugammadex use include higher age, ASA score, BMI, abdominal and thoracic surgery, higher rocuronium doses, emergency surgery and the use of NMT monitoring.Trial registrationN/A.Key points• Introduction of NMT monitoring with automatic recording coincides with an increase in (documented) use of NMT monitoring.• Sugammadex is more frequently used in patients with a ...

Detection of Anaplasma spp. and Ehrlichia spp. in dogs from a veterinary teaching hospital in Italy: a retrospective study 2012 –2020
AbstractAnaplasma phagocytophilum,Anaplasma platys andEhrlichia canis, responsible of diseases in dogs, are tick-borne pathogens with a proven or potential zoonotic role that have shown increasing prevalence worldwide. The aims of this retrospective study were to assess the frequency ofAnaplasma spp. andEhrlichia spp. exposure in dogs tested in a veterinary teaching hospital in Italy over a 9-year period, to compare the performance of the diagnostic tests used, to evaluate correlations with clinical data, and to genetically analyse the identified bacteria. During the study period, 1322 dogs tested by at least one of the ra...

Outcomes and Functional Deterioration in Hospital Admissions with Acute Hypoxemia
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with acute hypoxemia in the emergency room have a poorer functional status after hospital discharge. This decline may be of multifactorial origin.PMID:38525775 | DOI:10.3390/arm92020016 (Source: Adv Data)

Translation and Validation of the Chinese Language Version of the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test in Patients with Allergic Rhinitis
CONCLUSION: The CARAT10-C scale demonstrates good reliability and validity in the preliminary assessment of AR. It holds potential value in the evaluation and management of AR in China, although the specific application effects still require further investigation.PMID:38518133 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Cross-sectional study of influenza trends and costs in Malaysia between 2016 and 2018
ConclusionsThe study provides valuable insights into the dynamic landscape of influenza in Malaysia. The findings reveal a consistent year-round presence of influenza with irregular seasonal peaks, including a notable influenza A epidemic in 2017 and consistent surges in influenza B incidence during March across three years. These findings underscore the significance of continuous monitoring influenza subtypes for informed healthcare strategies as well as advocate for the integration of influenza vaccination into Malaysia ’s national immunization program, enhancing overall pandemic preparedness. Repercussions of moving patients on the context of practice: perspectives of the nursing team
CONCLUSION: the volume of moving patient associated with unforeseen demands, care complexity and insufficient staff and resources have a negative impact on the delivery of care, with clinical risks and work overload. The findings make it possible to improve the regulation of patients entering and leaving the units, work organization and care management, avoiding clinical risks, delays, omissions and work overload.BACKGROUND: (1) Moving patients around the hospital requires structure and work organization.BACKGROUND: (2) Nursing estimates dedicating 10-15 minutes to 2-3 hours of work on these interventions.BACKGROUND: (3) F...

Plasma hyperosmolality during cardiopulmonary bypass is a risk factor for postoperative acute kidney injury: Results from double blind randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a hyperosmolar prime solution did not increase the incidence of postoperative CSA-AKI in this study, while high plasma osmolality alone increased the associated risk by 30%. The data suggests further examination of plasma hyperosmolality as a relative risk factor of CSA-AKI.PMID:38513672 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241240726 (Source: Perfusion)
