Science Saturday: Nanopore sequencing method rapidly detects, identifies antibiotic-resistant microbes, Mayo Clinic research shows
A growing number of people are dying from antibiotic-resistant infections. These infections are fueled by microbial species that are mutating to evade the drugs developed to destroy them. More than 1.2 million people worldwide died in 2019 from antibiotic-resistant infections.  In response, a team of researchers from Mayo Clinic ’s Center for Individualized Medicine has developed a sequencing technology to rapidly detect and identify microbes and antibiotic-resistant phenotypes in a single test. The innovative nanopore sequencing method is published in Surgery and mSphere,… ...

Gastrointestinal colonization of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: an unrecognized burden upon hospital infection control
Background: Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become endemic in many healthcare settings. Aim: To analyse the incidence, risk factors, outcomes, and genomic relatedness of patients with newly diagnosed gastrointestinal colonization of MRSA. Methods: Epidemiology and genetic analysis by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in a hospital network in Hong Kong. Findings: Between October 1st, 2015 and December 31st, 2018, a total of 919 (2.7%) of 34,667 patients had newly diagnosed gastrointestinal MRSA colonization by admission screening. The incidence was 0.67 ± 0.32 per 1000 patient-days per quarter. Including ...

Factors that affect dentists' use of antibiotic prophylaxis: Findings from a The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network questionnaire
Conclusions: Dentists ' AP decision making seems most influenced by official guidelines, scientific literature, and advice from a physician or medical specialist.Practical implications: These results suggest that one of the most effective means for promoting concordance of dentists clinical practice with the scientific basis for AP is to emphasize the importance and clarity of American Heart Association and American Dental Association recommendations and antimicrobial stewardship regarding prevention of infective endocarditis and prosthetic joint infections. Literature review on the distribution characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens in neonatal sepsis
Purpose: Neonatal sepsis (NS) has no specific clinical manifestations and blood culture analysis requires a long period of time. Knowledge of prevalent bacterial isolates and their antibiotic susceptibility is crucial when choosing an empirical therapy to decrease morbidity and mortality. This literature review summarizes the distribution characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens associated with bloodstream infections in Chinese neonates, and thus serves as a reference for pediatricians. Methods: The full-text journal database, CNKI, was searched using the key words " neonatal " , " sepsis " , and...

South Africa: What Can You Do to Reduce the Risk of Getting an Antibiotic-Resistant Infection?
[GroundUp] You need to try to avoid getting an antibiotic-resistant infection for two reasons. You don't want to end up in hospital with a difficult-to-treat potentially fatal disease and you don't want to spread such an infection and put other people in hospital.
