Genotoxic and genoprotective effects of some antipsychotic drugs, methylphenidate and atomoxetine on human lymphocytes and HepG2 cells
CONCLUSIONS: As a result, the genotoxicity of the drugs was found to be dose-dependent, and all drugs showed a genoprotective effect on DNA-damaged cells.PMID:38436168 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202402_35456 (Source: European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences)

Combination pharmacological therapy targeting multiple mechanisms of sleep apnoea: a randomised controlled cross-over trial
Conclusions While AtoOxy halved AHI, and acetazolamide lowered AHI by a third, the combination of these leading experimental interventions provided no greater efficacy than AtoOxy alone. Failure of acetazolamide to further increase efficacy suggests overlapping physiological mechanisms. Trial registration number NCT03892772. (Source: Thorax)

A review of recent treatments for adults living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Conclusion: Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, as well as neurostimulation or a blend of these approaches were acknowledged as the most effective recent modalities in the treatment of adult ADHD.Contribution: This review reported on the most current approaches to treat adult ADHD. This will facilitate a better understanding and informed decisions with regard to dealing with adult ADHD. (Source: South African Journal of Psychiatry)

Development of a novel rodent rapid serial visual presentation task reveals dissociable effects of stimulant versus nonstimulant treatments on attentional processes
This study developed a novel touchscreen task for rats based on the structure of a human RSVP task and used pharmacological manipulations to investigate their effects on different performance measures. Normal animals were trained to respond to a target image and withhold responding to distractor images presented within a continuous sequence. In a second version of the task, a false-alarm image was included, so performance could be assessed relative to two types of nontarget distractors. The effects of acute administration of stimulant and nonstimulant treatments for ADHD (amphetamine and atomoxetine) were tested in both ta...

Prescribed psychotropic medication patterns among treated Foster Care enrollees: a single institution study
ConclusionWithin the cohort of 273 foster care enrolled subjects aged 2 to 19 years old who received psychotropic medication prescriptions, non-stimulant ADHD medications (both alpha-agonists and atomoxetine) and atypical antipsychotics were more commonly co-prescribed additional psychotropic medication compared to other co-prescribed medication categories. This study illustrates prescribing patterns in a community mental health clinic focused on judicious prescribing of psychotropic medications in foster care enrolled youth. Despite this, 41% of the youth treated in this clinic received at least one prescription for psy...
