Still waters run deep
Life goes on. With or without your consent, reality is reality and there is not much you can do sometimes other than accept it. While the big questions brew and boil inside your head, there is life happening all around you. The children on the lakeshore. The parents' 40th anniversary. The new niece born. The school year starting.Busy brings quiet to the mind. It's my go-to coping strategy, and probably the root of my workaholic personality. If your life isn't great at the moment - make someone else's better. If you're down, help someone else up. If you're confused, take refuge in the things you know for sure - medical fact...

DD Cream? BB Cream for Eyes? The Latest in Beauty Alphabet Soup
I guess it's inevitable, but there is now something called DD cream. Yep. And I don't hate it. Sure, it sound like I'm stuttering my way through the alphabet, but these creams have all become must haves in my morning routine. Each does something different, but they are all awesome does it all products for crazy busy girls on the run (like moi!), which is maybe why the names are so short? Anyway, here are my faves from B to D (though, it looks I'm a little bummed the industry skipped A -- my own initial). Windows 8.1 Preview…
Is anyone else running the Windows 8.1 Preview? I’m not having any problems once I figured out what was making my mouse stutter. It was the Logitech mouse software that wasn’t jibbing with this new version of Windows. All the other issues I was having have been solved with updates and patches. AMD released a new Windows 8.1 driver today making things even smoother as far as my computer’s gaming prowess is concerned. I still don’t use the “Start Menu” much preferring to go straight to the “Desktop”. I am starting to use the start menu more and more, though.  It is a learning process that isn’t exactly...

7 Ways To Win At Making First Impressions
We've all blown first impressions before and we're still standing. That means they aren't important, right? Wrongo-mania. First impressions often times set the stage for an entire relationship, or lack thereof, and if you can learn how to master them you'll start seeing better results all across the board. In your work life, personal life, even love life, first impressions separate the winners from the folks who talk about some day being winners. Here are 7 ways make these crucial moments count. 1) Use a CONCISE greeting This point one is #1 because it's the first point of interaction, not to mention the most-commonly s...

What a state of mind...
Yesterday I awoke really early, feeling at long last semi-normal. YES! The flu was finally behind me--my body had mended and I could enjoy it sans pain and discomfort!  I was able to begin the day with my yoga routine, cycle a bit and looked forward to walking with my husband once he awoke. That is ... until ... while moving from the family room (where I'd begun working on our taxes) into the kitchen one of our cats hurried in front of me where somehow her body became enmeshed with my moving legs. Within seconds my back jerked into spasm as I attempted to un-twine our kitty and %~*@#!  The jolt of pain was swift an...

It Didn’t Feel Like A “Win”
By Birdstrike M.D.   My kid and I are outside in the front yard blowing bubbles, enjoying the blue skies and 70 degree weather when she says, “Cool Daddy! Look, there’s a police car coming down the street. Oh, cool! I think he’s coming to see us!” Uh, oh, I think to myself. Despite my kid’s excitement, I know that rarely does anything good come delivered by a policeman. My wife is inside, my one kid is with me and my other is inside, so they’re not coming to give me some tragic news. Or are they? My parents….my siblings….is everyone okay? Why is a sheriff pulling into my driveway? I exhale for a minute...

2003 Canberra Firestorm remembered.
Today is the 10th anniversary of the Canberra Firestorm. On Saturday 18th January 2003 a freak and devastating firestorm tore through our city. 4 people died and over 500 homes were destroyed. It resulted in the 2nd largest single hospital disaster response in Australian history. I was working that day. 2 days later I wrote this story. ———————————————————————– the firestorm. It was bloody horribly awesome. Peeking out of the small window in the resuscitation room, it seemed the wor...
