Interviews as an ESL
Hi. I've been blessed with the opportunity to have several interviews in the upcoming weeks. I'm an ESL applicant, and I have to admit I'm super nervous about my interviews. I usually don't have any problem writing or understanding English. However, when I get nervous, I usually stutter when trying to speak English. I manage to convey my ideas and thoughts, but I have to admit that my delivery isn't the best. Should I tell my interviewers about this beforehand? Thanks for all the tips. Your funniest OR story?
I was just remembering an incident that still makes me laugh. Years ago I was giving anesthesia for a guy having a herniorrhaphy under regional. I'm filling out my chart as the nurse starts to prep the patient. After lifting his gown I see the circulator turn beet red, speechless. I look down and the guy had put a post-it note on his penis saying "handle with care". I announced loudly to the room "who put this note saying cut here?" The patient, panicked, starts stammering "that's not what... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is talking about having a stutter as a kid ok in secondaries/interviews?
Would this be a good idea for adversity essays? I had a stutter as a kid (doesn’t affect me anymore) and it led me to not feeling confident speaking in classroom / more formal settings. I did a bunch of things to overcome it including speech and debate and have now become a speech and debate coach for a high school. I’m worried that this may lead some people to question whether I will be a good physician if I have struggled with speaking before. Any advice? Thanks in advance. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Adversity/Challenge Essay Topics
I don't want to hop onto anyone else's thread and steal their thunder, but I was hoping to get some advice on possible challenge/adversity essay topics: Stuttering - Throughout my childhood and high school, I had a stutter which I went to a speech therapist for. I struggled, and still struggle, with certain words and phrases. I was shy and quiet for years in my childhood since I was afraid to speak up, and while my stutter is significantly less noticeable, now, from time to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Biggest Weakness or red flag??
Can I address stuttering as my biggest weakness during my interviews? I had a very mild stutter when I was a child and this led to the lack of confidence and make me feel like my words were inferior and insignificant compared to others. I have since worked on this by participating in public speaking and have significantly improved in my speech. I might stutter once or twice during my interview but I think that’s normal. Is this worth noting as a weakness? Or will it be a red flag? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stuttering During Rotations
I have a question from attending physicians and residents. I have a pretty bad stutter. I am an IMG. My stutter is bad to the point that I have blocks and my head starts moving when I speak and I don't make eye contact. When I am on the phone people usually get frustrated or think the signal is bad. In medical school, I never did any presentations except twice which went very badly. All the classes we had to present I talked to teachers to just give me a C. I have heard in America residents... Should I forget about IM (and other similar specialties) given my disabilities?
I really want to pursue IM, although the more I've talked to individuals about all it entails, the more I've realized this field in particular requires a lot of rounding/presenting. I know this happens in all fields of medicine, but it seems public speaking is a very large part of this field. I have a mild stutter. I don't have a repetitive stutter, but I will sometimes speak with short breaks in my sentences as I struggle to get a certain word out. I had a couple of classmates mention... Social Anxiety and awkwardness making MS3 a nightmare?
I am half way through my surgery rotation and I am struggling like hell. I am the student who is usually quiet, and fumbles with instruments. My nervousness for the next day makes it impossible for me to study or sleep at a decent time and I end up looking even dumber. I constantly drink alcohol almost every night just to make these feelings go away. I am OKAY at communicating, I just tend to be very monotone and kind of dry, and I just get really quiet and stutter my words in group... Social Anxiety and awkwardness making MS3 a nightmare? Stuttering and MD Interview
Hey everyone, I have three MD interviews coming up, and these are my first ever MD interviews. Ever since I could remember I've had a mild stutter which obviously gets worse during stressful times such as interviews. I was wondering what adcoms think of it when they encounter an interviewee with a stutter. I was also wondering if any of yall have any tips/comments/advice for me. Any comments from fellow interviewees, MD student interviewers and/or adcoms would be highly appreciated.... Stuttering and MD Interview (Source: Student Doctor Network)
