NHLBI Forum on Heart, Lung, and Sleep Disorders in American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) Youth (Day 1)
The goal of this forum is to bring together experts to identify knowledge gaps and research opportunities that can facilitate the prevention and future treatment interventions of HLS disease outcomes among American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) youth. The working group will provide a forum for discussion of research gaps and promising opportunities/recommendations for future research in AI/AN/NH youth. For more information go to http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/news/events/nhlbi-forum-heart-lung-and-sleep-disorders-american-indianalaska-nativenative-hawaiianAir date: 8/2/2016 8:00:00 AM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

NHLBI Forum on Heart, Lung, and Sleep Disorders in American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) Youth (Day 2)
The goal of this forum is to bring together experts to identify knowledge gaps and research opportunities that can facilitate the prevention and future treatment interventions of HLS disease outcomes among AI/AN/NH youth. The forum will focus on modifiable risk factors that contribute to morbidity and mortality due to HLS diseases among this minority demographic. Evidence of epidemiological risk exists in older AI/AN/NH populations, but not the younger populations. AI/AN/NH children exhibit a poor health trajectory entering adulthood and these disease pathways remain unknown. The causes must be elucidated to provide the ev...

A daily period of unproductivity: Can we solve the mystery of sleep?
NIH Director's Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series The overall goal of the Sehgal lab is to determine the mechanisms that drive circadian rhythms and sleep, and to address the importance of these processes for organismal fitness. Most physiological processes display circadian (~24h) rhythms driven by endogenous clocks. Dr. Sehgal’s interest is in sleep in particular, which, in addition to the clock, is controlled by a homeostatic system that ensures adequate sleep for an organism. Most of our work is conducted with Drosophila, although we also use mammalian models. For more information go to https://oir.nih.gov/walsAir da...

Wertheimer Remembrance: The challenge of shared decision making between physicians and patients
In Remembrance of Alan Wertheimer, PhD, the CC Department of Bioethics Presents the First Annual Widening the Lens Lecture Alan Wertheimer's contributions to bioethics were far reaching and invaluable. After a very successful career in Political Science at the University of Vermont, Alan embraced bioethics with intellectual curiosity and acumen, often challenging prevailing views and urging broader thinking. He practiced a fruitful method - Widening the Lens (reflected in the title of this lecture and the subtitle of his last book), challenging all of us to consider why the norms and principles that guide our thinking abo...
