Working as a Kennel Tech plus my other experiences - what are my chances of getting into vet school?
Hello all, I am going to be a junior in undergrad after summer break. I am going to apply to vet school next summer, the cycle after this current one. I began my job as a kennel tech almost a year ago at a small animal vet hospital. I am running out of time to gain experience and this issue is on my mind 24/7 to the point that I am losing sleep over it, so any advice is greatly appreciated! As I have stated, I have been a part-time kennel tech for almost a year, and I have almost 1,000... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Oscars....or General movie thread
I wanted an active thread that gets away from the general "anesthesia is dying" and "why would anyone live in CA and NYC" threads, so let's talk MOVIES. Anyone have any interesting Oscars predictions? How about any snubs? Personally I watched most of the movies and the frontrunner put me to sleep (Nomadland). The movie that most hated was the one I liked the most (Trial of the Chicago 7) I'd just like a fun movie thread. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medical specialities/residencies with no night calls
Hi, Last year I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, which is a chronic sleep disorder. My physician told me to have a better sleep schedule, and I'm aware of the decrease of my narcolepsy attacks. I don't want to give up my dream of having a career in medicine, but I also know that I can't work night shifts without risking my own health. Which specialties/residencies would allow me to have a better sleep schedule? I've done some research and some of the answers I got were psychiatry and... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Residency and lack of sleep
Im starting med school in a few months and I’ve been watching too many videos on “a day in the life of a resident.” I have a serious concern about lack of sleep now, because I’ve always slept 8 hours a night. I’m thinking perhaps EM (obviously this is subject to change). I know EM residency is around 60 hours most weeks but for about a month a yr it’s like 80 hour week. During these 80 hour weeks will I ever have down time to close my eyes/take a nap during a shift? Thanks in advanced (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is it worth going into medical school if you don't want to do a residency?
Ok before I get shut down immediately hear me out, I am very familiar with the "don't go to medical school if you don't want to practice medicine" line. The thing is that I do want to practice medicine, but after familiarizing myself with what residency truly is I decided that I need to be honest with myself, is this the right path for me? I love helping people, I love the science behind medicine, but I don't like suffering. Working 80+ hours a week while being sleep deprived for YEARS is a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do W's look bad in my context?
I don't want to talk about it much, but I have been having personal problems and am not getting much sleep and waking up every 2 hours at night. I was so exhausted that I slept straight through 3 alarm clocks this morning, causing me to sleep through an exam. I've been feeling overwhelmed for awhile. It's not a prereq, but I need to W that class I slept through an exam in. Too, that'll lighten my load with school so I can deal with my other current life circumstances. I read Moko's post... Am I wasting my time? 24 Ws
Hello, I'm a 27 y/o graduating with my BS in Electrical Engineering this coming may with a 3.8x GPA (AMCAS is also 3.8x). I have 24 withdrawals. Here is the basic laydown 1. The first 21 withdrawals were incurred while working a full-time nightshift job. This was untenable and wrecked my sleep schedule. I was eventually diagnosed with a sleep disorder and sought a retroactive medical withdrawal, which my university approved. That is the first 15 withdrawals. I continued to struggle a... Losing EM skillset at low volume?
In the process of moving cities and figuring out what a future job looks like: Talking to a very large university hospital for their community sites - not their big top tier EM academic site. Since this hospital system has some 10+ hospital systems, I can vary up my practice setting. Option A: Full time at a 7k-8k volume shop. Have a great relaxing job. Lose my skill set over time and slowly not remain comfortable with volume, and maybe even acuity. But probably will be able to sleep... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

WAMC- What else should I do?
Hello all! I decided to make a WAMC thread because 1) I will always think I didn't do good enough no matter what (bad character trait I know) and 2) was stressing and couldn't sleep so I figured I should put my thoughts to use. MY MAIN GOAL FOR THIS THREAD is to hear from you guys about what I should do from January 2021 until June 2021 when I submit my application. My concerns about my application are that: 1) No research ... was given the opportunity by the professor who will be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Help me pick a job?
Job 1: MD only - Flagship hospital. Private group. Eat what you kill, blended unit. Average ~400K working ~45hrs/week. 6-8 week vacation. Blended unit value/average income has been steady in the group for years as far as I can tell. 18-20 weekday calls (home call, usually can sleep the night). 4 double weekend calls/year (Sat + Sun, 1st/2nd). Weekends are busy during the day, but seldom call back at night. No real benefits, everything comes out of pocket. Job 2: ACT model - Old hospital... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

DAT study materials
Hello. I am 2 years removed from college and just started studying for the DATs. I plan on taking the DATs in the end of May and applying next cycle. I work 3 days out of the week (12 hour shifts). Those 3 days I just pretty much work and sleep. Luckily, I have the other 4 days to just hit the gym and study (about 6-8 hours a day). Right now I've just been using Chads videos for reviewing gen chem material. However, what are all the materials that helped you guys study for the DATs? It... Is it unwise to pursue IM simply for fellowship?
USDO, 243/237. App is otherwise average. I sent in my app to EM and IM programs, mostly university and some community university programs. On the EM side of things, I enjoyed my rotations but some of the effects on my sleep cycle and the scary job market in the future (even post-COVID) had me weary. I also did a few IM months and while it did not get my juices flowing as much, I walked away enjoying the workflow and having a bit more meaningful relationship with patients on the inpatient... Low GPA, Lots of Experience, Decent DAT
Hey! I've worked over 1000 hours in dental offices as an assistant. I've worked chairside doing preop impressions, instrument passing, prepping rooms, sterilization, and pouring stone models, along with many other assistant jobs. I've also worked with a sleep apnea and TMD specialist in my area where I take PANs, deliver appliances, conduct follow ups and patient education, take digital impressions, adjust appliances, and communicate with sleep physicians and lab techs. Thank you so much... Low GPA, Lots of Experience, Decent DAT (Source: Student Doctor Network)
