Correlates of Impairment and Growth in Families of Young Autistic Children
J Autism Dev Disord. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10803-024-06339-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this project was to investigate potential correlates of family life impairment in families of young autistic children. This project incorporated measures of specific child and parent challenges in addition to a commonly used unidimensional measure of autism characteristics. In this way, we could assess whether such challenges explain variance in family life impairment, and whether their inclusion diminish associations between autism characteristics and family life impairment. Cross-sectional data were collected f...

Elevated periodic limb movement index is associated with hypoxemia in children with early onset scoliosis
ConclusionThe study suggests that children with early onset scoliosis have higher frequency of periodic limb movements during sleep, and these may be correlated with increased arousal and with hypoxemia. (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

Circadian misalignment proxies, BMI, and chronic conditions: the role for weekday to weekend sleep differences
ConclusionsOur findings, which demonstrate that even a slight weekend sleep extension and variability of just 1  h is associated with higher values of BMI, suggest incorporating measures for sleep consistency and regularity into clinical protocols and public health guidelines to prevent and treat obesity and related diseases. Adult ADHD Linked to Later Lewy Body Disease, Cognitive Impairment
Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be at increased risk of dementia and cognitive impairment compared with those without ADHD, according to areport in theAmerican Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Adults with ADHD seem particularly susceptible to dementia associated with Lewy body disease, a disorder characterized by abnormal deposits of proteins called Lewy bodies in the brain that results in various forms of cognitive impairment, delirium-like symptoms, Parkinson ’s-like movement problems, and hallucinations.“Determining whether there is an association between ADHD and subsequent conversio...

Orexinergic Receptor Antagonists as a New Therapeutic Target to Overcome Limitations of Current Pharmacological Treatment of Insomnia Disorder
This study reviews the benefits and risks of current pharmacological treatments for insomnia, with special reference to the orexinergic system as a novel therapeutic target for treatment. The prescription of GABAergic mechanism enhancers (benzodiazepine (BZD) and "Z drugs") has shown efficacy in short-term insomnia treatment (less than 4 weeks), however, concerns arise regarding their long-term effectiveness, unfavorable tolerability and safety profiles, including the potential for dependency. Drugs with antihistamine properties, including certain antidepressants and antipsychotics, exhibit short-term efficacy but have doc...

Clinical prediction of opioid use disorder in chronic pain patients: a cohort-retrospective study with a pharmacogenetic approach
CONCLUSIONS: Functional polymorphisms related to OPRM1 variant and CYP2D6 phenotypes may predict a higher OUD risk. Established risk factors such as young age, elevated MEDD and lower incomes were identified. A predictive model is expected to be implemented in clinical setting among CNCP patients under long-term opioids use.PMID:38619184 | DOI:10.23736/S0375-9393.24.17864-9 (Source: Minerva Anestesiologica)

Investigating a clinically informed sleep disturbance threshold for physical and mental health among Gulf War Illness veterans
CONCLUSIONS: Disturbed sleep was associated with measures of pain, fatigue, and cognitive health. Our results suggest that a previously determined clinical threshold for clinically disturbed sleep is useful when examining the health status of the study population. Given that GWI is associated with elevated PSQI scores and a high frequency of disturbed sleep, cutoffs determining sleep health should be sensitive to population exposures and health history to improve interpretability.PMID:38616799 | PMC:PMC11015895 | DOI:10.1093/sleepadvances/zpae018 (Source: Adv Data)
