Question about pre-med lifestyle
Curious to see how many parties pre-meds have attended. What time do you guys typically sleep? I'm a first year, and everyone around me goes out to frat parties every other night, sleep at 2 am after laughing in the lounge on our floors, etc. Me on the other hand have never been to a single party in my life, have not done drugs/ drank, and usually sleep around 12 am. Am I missing out? I scored over 95%+ on both my BCPM midterms thus far while you only need an 85% for an A. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anyone actually enjoy residency?
Hi everyone, Did anyone actually enjoy their residency and had a great experience? We hear all the time how miserable it is, no sleep, too much work, not treated well, yelled at, etc etc. But is it really as bad as people say it is and make it out to be? Anyone have a great experience and enjoyed their years? Starting anesthesia/ICU double specialty program next month and pretty terrified. Thanks. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Individual Sleep Patterns/Preferences
I was consulting with a pediatric ENT and pediatric dentist earlier today on ankyloglossia regarding a patient and how this can contribute to behavioral and ADHD-like symptom presentation and the need for improved screening as it’s not entirely uncommon and generally underdiagnosed. We all know about quality sleep as essential for optimal functioning and the conversation left me wondering about actual sleep patterns among healthcare professionals and how individual sleep... Is xanax contraindicated in Asthma / Copd exacerbation
Is there any data that restricts the use of low dose xanax (0.5mg) in mild asthma exacerbations (not requiring o2) Can they still take to help them sleep. Is it a complete contraindication? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Perennial question updates: salary/competitiveness
Hey all I know there are multiple threads on similar subjects, but as the years go by these things are a dynamic process and I would love to get a feel for the current pulse. I have waffled back and forth on sleep most of my residency, and recently was shocked to get diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea, which i can now retrospectively conclude may be in large part connected to my chronic fatigue (which i have blamed on med school/residency) and mood (again blamed training). Given the new... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Clerkship Grades all Passes
What's the word on all passes on clerkships? I can't seem to get anything higher than a pass, being one point away from high pass on both so far. I like to sleep well at night, stay healthy, keep in touch with friends and family, hike, cook, create art; all the things that I value in my life as well as work hard. But I'm surrounded by students who seem to work harder at the sacrifice of these things I wrote above. The competition makes passing feel like failing, at least when stacked against... Eating and sleep
Not an anesthesia question, but you guys are wicked smart (with a Boston accent) so instead of me doing a Google scholar search, I’ll just ask you all. I am currently in Spain. People here are nuts. The restaurants are closed at dinner time and don’t open until 830 and don’t really get busy until 10pm. Tiny kids and very old people are wandering the streets well into the morning. So my wife and I had a small discussion. Is it healthy to eat at midnight then go right to sleep? I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Surviving Night Shift
How do you survive stretches of night shifts? I have to do 3-4 per month and still not sure if it’s better to cluster them together or only do 1-2 at a time. Also noticed after a shift, I come home and sleep as soon as I can, but then wake up a few hours later. It’s tough to get a full 8 hours of sleep even if I waste the entire day. Anyone have any tips or tricks to getting through nights? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Interview tips for a full-time, night shift ER tech?
I work 7pm to 7am, and sleep 9am to 4pm. Thankfully, for Geisinger's, I have five full days to readjust. I only have twenty-four hours for Jefferson's. Aside from getting as much sleep as possible the night of (and an energy drink or two), am I allowed to say this to ADCOMs during the interview? "I'm sorry if I seem a little tired, I work full-time nights at so and so" Or is that unprofessional? Thanks in advance! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hypertension after Induction - Case Discussion
Hey guys I had a weird occurrence the other day and had to cancel a case. There probably aren't many explanations for what happened but I've been surprised by input on these forums before. Patient is a 68 y/o female, 70kg, with a Hx of mild COPD (on stiolto), Hypertension, Hypothyroidism, and sleep apnea. She is scheduled for bilateral mastectomy with sentinel nodes for a 2 cm mass in the right breast, invasive lobular carcinoma. Hx both cataracts done in past 2 years. Hx hysterectomy and... Everyday job stressors, the outpatient edition
This post is mostly coming from a place of having had had a kind of a bad week of poor sleep and worse patients, but it's revealed a few trends that I'm hoping to get input about. --some bad patient interactions put me out of commission for a day or more. I spend my day after work crying or deep breathing, and trying to self-soothe with TV or my various favorite haunts on the internet. --A "bad interaction" can be anything from: --me second-guessing how I addressed an acute issue in a... Fellowship Strategy
I am a man with many varied interests, and a large debt burden. What I want to be is a man with a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. I'm interested in sleep medicine fellowship and addiction fellowship following a psychiatry residency which will give me the learning of psychotherapy of the east coast. I have two questions: 1) what do sleep medicine psychiatrists really do? I've done some reading and it seems like interpreting electronic... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
