An evaluation of a novel bowel preparation regimen and its effect on the utility of colon capsule endoscopy: a prospective cohort study with historical controls
ConclusionsThe rate of adequate bowel preparation has improved following the introduction of a new regimen. However, further work is needed to increase the complete test rate. A significant proportion of patients continue to avoid colonoscopy following CCE. (Source: Techniques in Coloproctology)

Bowel cancer screening
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in both males and females in the UK giving rise to over 40,000 new cancer cases per year. It arises from polyps as part of the adenoma –carcinoma sequence. Early detection can aid treatment and improve outcomes. Faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) and direct imaging using colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy has been shown to be advantageous in the detection of polyps and earlier cancer. We review the evidence and provide summaries of current strategies as well as future potential developments. (Source: Surgery (Medicine Publishing))

Unusual case of severe diarrhoea
Introduction A 56-year-old man with COVID-19 pneumonia, requiring mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, was transferred to our hospital. He was successfully treated with dexamethasone and remdesivir, followed by favipiravir, and he was extubated on day 30. Eighteen days after admission, he developed severe watery diarrhoea (passing more than 7000 mL/day). Subsequently, he went into shock due to hypovolaemia and hypoalbuminaemia (2.3 g/dL), and norepinephrine and albumin administration were commenced. Contrast-enhanced CT showed thickening of the small and large intestinal walls without findings su...

Noninvasive Assessment of Acute Graft-Versus-Host Disease of the Gastrointestinal Tract After Allogeneic Hemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Using 18F-FDG PET
Conclusion: 18F-FDG PET is a useful noninvasive diagnostic test for acute GIT-GVHD, which when present always involves the colon and usually in its entirety, suggesting colonic biopsy obtained by sigmoidoscopy is adequate for histologic confirmation when acute GIT-GVHD is suspected. Of note, 18F-FDG PET cannot distinguish acute GIT-GVHD from non-GVHD inflammatory changes in the colon. (Source: Journal of Nuclear Medicine)

Evaluation of Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy Utilization for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Georgia, USA
Curr Oncol. 2022 Nov 20;29(11):8955-8966. doi: 10.3390/curroncol29110703.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent cancer, and the second most common cancer-related cause of death in the United States (USA). Timely screening reduces both CRC incidence and mortality. Understanding population behaviors and factors that influence CRC screening is important for directing interventions targeted at reducing CRC rates. The 1997-2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data were analyzed for trends in colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy utilization for CRC screening among adults in Georgia, USA. Overall,...
