The Inevitability of Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in Trillion ‐Dollar Spending Programs
David BoazIn 2009, as the federal government was rolling out the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program and preparing to spend another $787 billion in President Obama ’s “stimulus” package — both with little serious examination by Congress, I wrote a blog post titled “How to Spend a Trillion Dollars without Waste and Fraud. ”The first line of my post was “You can’t.” And I noted that the federal government knew that, because both Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general for TARP, and Gene Dodaro, the acting comptroller general, hadtold a House subcommittee— after the pas...

The Book of Ten Sayings 10
Concluding the wisdom in the Book of Ten Sayings is a truth that many people know from experience, yet who never mention it in company. The Tenth Saying is to be repeated every morning and every night, as part of your prayers to God to search your soul and tear out all the Pride, for ,Pride is my self-made supreme enemyIf you, like many of us, want to stay away from sin and evil, then we need to eschew effectively the sin of Pride. In  the old days, a list of sins was made, with Pride as the first sin listed, along with six others, These sins, named The Seven Deadly Sins, were considered especially bad because t...

Will Microbes Finally Force Modernization of the American Health Care System?
Mike Magee MD Science has a way of punishing humans for their arrogance. In 1996, Dr. Michael Osterholm found himself rather lonely and isolated in medical research circles. This was the adrenaline-infused decade of blockbuster pharmaceuticals focused squarely on chronic debilitating diseases of aging. And yet, there was Osterholm, in Congressional testimony delivering this message: “I am here to bring you the sobering and unfortunate news that our ability to detect and monitor infectious disease threats to health in this country is in serious jeopardy…For 12 of the States or territories, there is no one w...

Welcoming new fledglings to the medical fraternity§ “You shouldn’t have come into this profession.”§ “Oh damn, I should’ve gone for engineering.”§ “I am studying for exams, while all my friends from other fields are partying… this is not fair.”How many times do we hear these words? A closer look at the costs of EMBO publishing
There has been a lot of discussions on social media about the price that some publishers are coming up for publishing a paper in their journals - the so called article processing charges (APC). With some journals asking for values that are on the order of 10k and many scientists finding these values to be outrageous. Given that journals don't work to produce the research articles and get academics to do the evaluation, how can these journals claim the costs of publishing a paper to be anywhere close to 10k ? While I agree that these are outrageous values, I don't really believe that the price is mostly profit. A good sourc...

Real Earnings Should Stop Falling If Energy Prices Stop Rising
Alan ReynoldsIn an interesting newPeterson Institute blog, Jason Furman and Willie Powell write, “Real wages and compensation increased dramatically in the first six months of the pandemic, as prices fell while wages and compensation continued to grow. Since then, however, price growth has been more rapid than wage and compensation growth, and so real wages and compensation have been falling. ”The facts are clear, yet they scream out for clarification. First, evennominalaverage hourly earnings “increased dramatically in the first six months of the pandemic (March‐August 2020)” while the economy collapsed under...

The Case for Increasing H ‑2B Guest Worker Visas Is Strong
David J. BierCongresshas authorized the Biden administration to increase the cap on the number of H-2B seasonal guest worker visas this summer. In the past, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has only used a portion of the H-2B visas that Congress authorized it to use. In 2021, DHSauthorized just 22,000 of the 64,716 additional H-2B cap spots Congress created, citing higher-than-normal unemployment rates early that year. In December, itannouncedit would authorize just 20,000 for the end of winter season. But this summer should be different: the economic case for using all of the H-2B visas is stronger than ever.Empl...

State of the lab 9 - an informal report on the 9 years of EMBL-EBI
This blog post is part of ayearly series (or close to yearly) on running a research lab in academia. 2021 was the last of 9 years as a group leader at EMBL-EBI, which is the standard time given to group leaders to establish and run their labs at EMBL. For this year's blog post I thought it was a good time to look back at the full 9 years and I am going to (briefly) cover the time at EMBL with some numbers including giving an approximate account of the finances. This is something that I do with the group at the start of every year but it still feels strange to make financial numbers public. The scientistsA lot has happ...

Arizona Republic Report Leaves Out Important Details and Context On Universal Licensing
Jeffrey A. SingerThe Arizona Republic recently published a  report entitled, “Universal Licensing: Arizona opened the doors to less qualified workers ‐the public bears the risk. ” In its investigation of Arizona’suniversal licensing recognition law enacted in 2019 —a reform so successful and popular that it is being emulated by more than a third of other states—it mentioned irrelevant incidents and presented out‐of‐context data to malign this bold and enlightened reform. The article begins and ends with a  heart‐wrenching story about a California‐licensed veterinarian who received a t...

Reflections on Greenspan ’s “Irrational Exuberance” Speech after 25 Years
ConclusionMuch can be learned by reflecting on Greenspan ’s 1996 speech, especially given the global financial crisis of 2007–2009 and the current pandemic—both of which have increased the Fed’s power and weakened its independence. There is still no monetary rule to guide monetary policy, even as inflation has reared its head once more. What jumps out from Greenspan’s speech is how he posed a problem that the Fed never solved, and then made things worse. The New Year will test the Fed ’s resolve to taper QE, “normalize” interest rates, and slow inflation. With unprecedented fiscal deficits and debt, at least...

Makers and Takers
A few people have pointed out that Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is begging the federal government for help after the tornadoes, but he voted against funding for disaster relief for other states. Sure, that ' s hypocritical, but the conservative gospel of self-reliance was hypocritical before that happened. Rand Paul and politicians from other so-called red states make a political career out of decrying moochers and dependency on federal handouts. So okay, here ' s a chart from the Rockefeller Institute that tells you exactly which states pay more to the federal government than they receive in federal funding; and which stat...
