Biden ’s Math of Just Taxing the Rich Doesn’t Add Up
Adam N. MichelDespite the headlines, thePresident ’s 2024 Budget demonstrates how challenging it is to raise significant new tax revenue from a  small minority of wealthy taxpayers. The budget raises about $1.8 trillion from non‐corporate taxpayers over ten years. Yet, following all the rhetoric about the rich not paying their fair share, it should be striking that across more than twenty new and expanded taxes, the administration’s plan does not even raise enough revenue from wealthy taxpayers to cover new spending proposed in Biden’s budget, let alone theprojected $20 trillion deficit over the next ten years....

The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the United States
ConclusionThe United States faces a considerable fiscal challenge with the explosive growth in government spending, the escalation of entitlement payments, and slower demographic growth. How immigrants impact the fiscal state of the U.S. government is important for policymakers and the public to consider when evaluating different reforms to get the U.S. government onto a sounder fiscal footing. Our paper “The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the United States ” is the first in a new series of Cato papers that analyze the fiscal impact of immigration. Why does health care cost so much in the U.S. part the infinity
I ' m on a lot of email lists thanks to my profession. A message I got today is below. I won ' t make you read it before I explain that one reason medical services cost so much in this godforsaken country is that providers have to hire people to with specialized training and pay them salaries to deal with this crap. Keep in mind that they see people with multiple different kinds of insurance and they need to keep track of what insurance the person has, what it will pay for, how much, and how, based on manuals containing hundreds of pages of similar dreck. And if they don ' t get it just right, they won ' t be paid. In civi...

Why we don't get what we pay for
Before I take up the subject of this post, a note about commenting. I wish I could publish more comments but most of them are ridiculous or off topic. For example, I wrote a post about Kanye West. He was the subject of the post. It was about him. And I get a comment to the effect of Why won ' t I talk about Black antisemitism? WTF? I post about the high cost of health care in the U.S. and I get a comment about total federal revenues and the federal budget deficit. BTW, obviously federal revenues will generally increase over time because the economy and the population grow. Also you have to adjust for inflation. But that ' ...

14 Ways the Tax Code Subsidizes Higher Education
Adam N. MichelThe federal government subsidizes higher education through a multitude of grants to universities, subsidized loans, and direct scholarship funding. In addition, the tax code includes at least 14 different programs that distort the education system and complicate tax filing. All told, the tax code subsidizes higher education to the tune of $322 billion over ten years. From an education policy perspective, the accumulation of all this federal spending has a distorting effect. Over time, the subsidies havelikelycontributed to thehigh price of college as subsidies increase demand, which drives up prices. This cycl...

What ’s Next For ChatGPT In Healthcare?
You have probably heard that ChatGPT has recently passed business, law and medical exams, qualified as a level-3 coding engineer at Google (with a $180K starting salary!), outperformed most students in microbiology and checked a passable grade in a 12th-grade AP literature test.  Of course, better take these results with a pinch of salt. Although the algorithm indeed did reasonably well on the USMLE test, it was not a full-value assessment as all questions requiring visual assessment were removed. Pinch of salt or not, however, it is obvious how the capabilities of these large language models have been expanding...
