Connected: remote technology in mental health services
Centre for Mental Health - This briefing summarises evidence from six studies on the use of digital and telephone technology to deliver mental health services. It finds that using remote technology can improve access to mental health support for rural communities, disabled people or people needing a specialist service far from home. It has the potential to increase access and choice in mental health care. But it also risks exacerbating inequalities for people who are digitally excluded.BriefingMore detail (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

You Don ’ t Have to be Mega-Conglomerate to Benefit from Health IT: A CareCognitics Deployment
When we hear about streamlined workflows, mobile phone services, and other benefits of a well-planned IT upgrade, it’s usually at some enormous, well-endowed, urban chain. But ambulatory health care providers can also tap IT to improve their patient experience, work loads, and revenues. Cookeville Medical Clinic, a provider with four clinics in central Tennessee, proves this. Cookeville has all the worries and pressures of rural practices: lots of Medicare and Medicaid patients, reimbursements that don’t keep up with inflation, and the looming threat of competition from high-tech companies and big insurers. In ...

‘Breaking Down Interstate Barriers to Telehealth Delivery’ Tops ATA ’ s Priorities for 2023
by JESSICA DAMASSA, WTF HEALTH Just one week before the ATA EDGE Policy Conference (12/7-12/9 Washington DC) we get a SNEAK PEEK at what’s topping the agenda – and the American Telemedicine Association (ATA)’s list of priorities for 2023 – to ensure that digital health and virtual care providers avoid the ‘telehealth cliff’ that could send us back to pre-pandemic scaling issues of both practice and reimbursement. Kyle Zebley, SVP of Public Policy at the ATA and Executive Director of ATA Action (the ATA’s affiliate advocacy organization) gives us the skinny on where policies currently stand at the feder...

“True, True, and Unrelated” in the age of “Product Placement/Embedded Marketing.”
BY MIKE MAGEE This is “high grandparenting season” at our home when you go “The Extra Mile.” That means it is possible on certain days on or between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day to find up to 20 children and grandchildren under our roof. With my wife one of ten, and me, one of twelve, we are no strangers to chaos. Our kids believe we feed off it, and maybe they’re right. With over 150 years under our collective belts, we two are – if nothing else – optimistic, resilient, and somewhat wiser then we were in our early years. For example, we know that the mere temporal or geographic approximation of ...

Empowering Biomedical Research in Rural West Virginia
Public health crises often disproportionately impact rural America. Sally L. Hodder, M.D., works to alleviate these disparities, especially regarding the opioid crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. She’s the director of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI), the associate vice president of clinical and translational research, and a professor of medicine at West Virginia University. Dr. Sally Hodder. Credit: West Virginia University. Dr. Hodder’s work is focused in West Virginia, but her results are valuable assets to researchers across the country. Not only does treating chronic...

Protectionist History Repeats, Again
Scott LincicomeA couple years ago, I took to this blog toremind then ‐candidate Joe Biden of the numerous problems that “Buy American” laws, which require U.S.-origin materials in federal procurement projects, caused back when he was vice president and overseeing implementation of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s infrastructure projects. T axpayer costs were high; projects were delayed (if not scuttled); and uncertainty reigned, eliciting numerous complaints from American companies and local officials trying to carry out the federal government’s plans. My warning, unfortunately, was ignore...

When Push Comes to Shove: The AMA v. Dobbs. Part 2.
BY MIKE MAGEE On November 8, 2022, five days after the 2022 Midterm elections, the AMA raised its voice in opposition to Republican efforts to promote second class citizenship for women by exerting public control over them and their doctors intensely private reproductive decisions. At the same time they sprinkled candidates on both sides of the aisle with AMA PAC money, raising questions whether their love of women includes active engagement or just passive advocacy. Trump and his now MAGAGA (“Make America Great and Glorious Again”) movement has now returned to center stage. With the...

Top 3 Digital Innovations that Transformed Healthcare
The following is a guest article by Chad Anguilm, Vice President of Growth at Medical Advantage Patient engagement is the next frontier in healthcare and single-platform patient portals created the digital foundation for this ongoing transformation. In today’s technology-driven world, patients now expect a seamless healthcare experience, which translates to a digital “one-stop shop” for managing their personal health information.  Many patients already use patient portals for tasks such as scheduling appointments and requesting prescription refills. The Art of Using Trauma Shears
I got a request recently from a maker of trauma shears to give their product a test drive and see what I think. I’m more than happy to give their shears a few turns around the block and kick the tires a bit. Who knows, maybe they’ll be really good. Maybe they’ll be my new favorite set. All the shears I’ve ever owned have come and gone. I don’t have a particular set that I’m really attached to right now. I’ve had some great sets of shears over the years. I think my longest running favorite pair lasted around five years. I don’t remember the brand now, but they were good. Black handle with a bit of cloth t...

5 Big Trauma Scene Mistakes You Can Avoid
We all have our good calls and our bad calls. Don’t we? Sometimes things just flow. Sometimes the patient, the bystanders, the crew members, everyone just clicks. And it’s beautiful. It’s like that perfect drive off the tee box that keeps you coming back for another round. The three point jumper that makes you wonder if you should have tried to play college ball. Unfortunately (perhaps) it is the rare scene that runs flawlessly. More often than not we look back on our calls and think about the things we could have, and should have done better. Of course, that’s how it should be. Without those moments we don’t ...
