Weekly Australian Health IT Links – 1 August, 2022.
Here are a few I have come across the last week or so. Note: Each link is followed by a title and a few paragraphs. For the full article click on the link above title of the article. Love the new Minister has ambitions to be maximally photogenic and not a ‘techie’!Otherwise all sorts of fun things!-----https://www.ausd...

This appeared last week: 18 July 2022Is telehealth the great panacea for rural health?Simon Judkins, Belinda Hibble& Stephen GourleyIssue 27 / 18 July 2022Instead of a telehealth explosion, where “we will get back in touch with you”, we need to refocus on a rural workforce explosion, where we can have clinicians and patients actually within hand’s reach of each otherOUT of a crisis comes opportunity, and with the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic marching on, opportunities to transform many aspects of our health care systems have flourished. One of the areas that has gained much interest is the potentia...

At the Core, Tuskegee Has Never Been Resolved
BY MIKE MAGEE July 25, 1972 was fifty years ago this week and it is a day that all AP Science journalists know by heart. As Monday’s AP banner headline read: “On July 25, 1972, Jean Heller, a reporter on The Associated Press investigative team, then called the Special Assignment Team, broke news that rocked the nation. Based on documents leaked by Peter Buxtun, a whistleblower at the U.S. Public Health Service, the then 29-year-old journalist and the only woman on the team, reported that the federal government let hundreds of Black men in rural Alabama go untreated for syphilis for 40 years in order to study th...

Why healthcare keeps losing good clinicians (or, why I walked away for a second time)
Guest post written by a wonderful PT who has walked away from the profession. Why healthcare keeps losing good clinicians (or, why I walked away for a second time) Firstly, I don’t know if the above statement is true. I just know a lot of good people who’ve left healthcare, across many different professions. And I highly recommend reading “This is going to Hurt” by Adam Kay, or if you don’t have the attention span, it’s now a TV series in 25 minute bites. Last week I resigned from my position as a Physiotherapist and Keyworker, working for a supplier on the ACC pain contract and other physical injury c...

Is It Time For The Australasian Institute Of Digital Health To Really Be More Than A Conference Organiser?
The objective would be to eventually have an organisation that had an academic as well as a managerial board and which maybe developed a journal to highlight Australian research and progress in digital health. To my eye these activities are rather under done and could be ramped up to develop a more balanced organisation into the future.I am sure some will think all is OK as it is, or that the AIDH is irrelevant anyway or that I am just an elderly out-of-touch curmudgeon but I do feel improvement and more balance is possible, and Australian Digital Health would be better for it. Does anyone have any views?David.  (Sour...

Maple Anticipated the Decline in Telehealth and Expects to Continue Growing
Maple is a Canadian healthcare success story. Founded in 2015, the company has grown steadily and is now the country’s largest online network of doctors. They offer both virtual care services as well as a virtual care platform. The company expects to continue growing in the years ahead. Healthcare IT Today sat down with Brett Belchetz, MD – Co-Founder & CEO of Maple to get his take on the current state of telehealth, where it can be...

How AI Can Advance Health Equity
The following is a guest article by Sachin Patel, CEO at Apixio. The use of AI in healthcare is gaining fast traction, with the total market expected to grow over 46% CAGR, reaching $96 billion by 2028. While AI has the potential to improve health equity, intrinsic and extrinsic biases that exist from the lack of diverse data exacerbate the problem. Furthermore, the closer an activity is to the point of care, the greater the risk of unintended biases in clinical decision-making. For example, an AI-powered system to predict the likelihood of hospitalization to avoid in-patient admission can help target interventions, preven...

Friday Feature: CyberPatriot
Colleen HroncichIt sounds clich é, but the world is changing rapidly. Careers that are now essential didn’t even exist when I was young. That makes it tough for parents and teachers to ensure kids are prepared for the future. This can be particularly challenging for homeschoolers or kids in rural areas who don ’t have the resources often found in larger schools. When my then ‐15‐year‐old daughter expressed interest in cyber security, we found a program calledCyberPatriot, which is sponsored by the Air Force Association. Kids form teams, learn about cyber security, and work in online competition...
