Don ’ t neglect the power of clinical examinations in modern medicine
I intended to write an essay endorsing the clinical examination (CE), but recent personal events have made me reconsider. I had outpatient sinus surgery and developed chest pain the next day, leading me to my local rural hospital’s emergency department (ED). The ED physician diagnosed atrial fibrillation, and a CT scan revealed a small pulmonary Read more… Don’t neglect the power of clinical examinations in modern medicine originally appeared in KevinMD.com. The Ins and Outs of Remote Patient Monitoring
Trying to talk about Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) can be like talking about math. We’re all familiar with what it is, but there are so many different avenues that it can take, that it honestly works best to divide it into pieces, just like how math is divided into algebra, geometry, theoretical, etc. This was made clear when we reached out to our lovely Healthcare IT Today community for their insights on RPM. So that is what we are going to do today. The following is what they had to say on RPM, divided into the many different avenues we need to be using in order to properly discuss RPM. Patient Care Experience Ky...

Dramatically Improving Population Health Through Remote Patient Monitoring Data
The following is a guest article by Anish Sebastian, CEO and Co-Founder of Babyscripts. As winter storms sweep the country and complicate transportation, healthcare access becomes a front-and-center issue. Rural hospitals across the U.S. are shuttering their labor, delivery, and maternity wards, in many cases closing altogether. Pregnant women in remote rural areas are even more at risk this winter than previous years. Thirty-six percent of U.S. counties now fit the designation of “maternity care desert,” meaning they have no obstetric hospitals or birth centers and no obstetric providers. For hospitals that have manag...

The “Antebellum Paradox”: What is it and why it matters.
BY MIKE MAGEE I recently made the case that “Health is foundational to a functioning democracy. But health must be shared and be broadly accessible to be an effective enabler of good government.” I also suggested that the pursuit of good health is implied and imbedded in the aspirational and idealistic wording of our U.S. Constitution, and that the active pursuit of health as a nation is essential if we wish to rise to Hamilton’s challenge in Federalist #1 and prove that we are “capable of establishing good government from reflection and choice.” So why are native white males lagging behind in health? ...

Health care is growing hard to come by in rural America. Three-quarters of rural counties suffer from doctor shortages. Whatever it is, I'm against it
I was quite interested to read this story about a rural Ohio county where local opposition led tocancellation of plans for a 400 megawatt solar energy project that would have provided the county with $3.6 million a year in tax revenue, adding up to $100 million over the life of the project. The same thing happened in the small town where I live. The town owns land it isn ' t using -- a six acre and a 12 acre parcel as I recall -- and had a proposal to install solar farms on the land and pay the town a substantial leasing fee. But the town meeting voted it down. Our town is in difficult financial straits, we can ' t really ...
