Awareness of stroke among patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients on hemodialysis, especially women and older people, have little knowledge about stroke.PMID:37531492 | PMC:PMC10393371 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2022.0644.R1.24042023

Associations of sarcopenic obesity vs either sarcopenia or obesity alone with cognitive impairment risk in patients requiring maintenance hemodialysis
CONCLUSIONS: SO and CI are highly prevalent in MHD patients. Participants with SO are at significantly higher risk of CI than those with sarcopenia or obesity alone. Furthermore, this association is consistent across different subgroups.PMID:37525570 | DOI:10.1002/ncp.11044

The impact of vascular access type on survival in haemodialysis: time for a paradigm shift? A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort, mortality was found to be more closely associated with comorbidities than with the type of vascular access. Tunnelled central venous catheters might be a viable option for haemodialysis patients.PMID:37526912 | DOI:10.1007/s40620-023-01675-z

Home Dialysis in North America: The Current State
Clin J Am Soc Nephrol. 2023 Jul 31. doi: 10.2215/CJN.0000000000000273. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is widespread interest in expanding the uptake of home dialysis in North America. While kidney transplantation should be the preferred option in eligible patients, home hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) offer cost-effective options for kidney replacement therapy. In this review, the motivation for promoting home dialysis is presented and the literature supporting it is critically reviewed. Randomized comparisons of home HD and PD to in-center HD have been challenging to conduct and provide limited informa...

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the provision of dialysis service and mortality in Veterans receiving maintenance hemodialysis in the VA: an interrupted time-series analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence that there was a disruption in the delivery of outpatient maintenance hemodialysis treatment in VHA facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and that the modest rise in death during the pandemic is unlikely to be due to missed dialysis.PMID:37524062 | DOI:10.1159/000532105

Comorbidity and in-hospital mortality in peritoneal dialysis patients: data of the Emilia Romagna region of Italy
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that in male, elderly hospitalized peritoneal dialysis patients with failing dialysis technique, comorbidity burden should be considered being a predictor of IHM.PMID:37522699 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202307_33158

Outcomes of arteriovenous graft vs. fistula for haemodialysis access in the elderly: A systematic review and meta ‑analysis
Exp Ther Med. 2023 Jul 6;26(2):399. doi: 10.3892/etm.2023.12098. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTThe impact of the type of vascular access on the outcomes in the elderly haemodialysis patients is still unclear. The goal of the present study was to compare survival outcomes in elderly haemodialysis patients who received either arteriovenous graft (AVG) or arteriovenous fistula (AVF). A systematic literature search was performed in EMBASE, Cochrane, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases for papers published from January 1954 until January 2022. Risk of bias in the selected publications was assessed by Newcastle Ot...
