COVID-19: An Overview of SARS-CoV-2 Variants-The Current Vaccines and Drug Development
Biomed Res Int. 2023 Aug 29;2023:1879554. doi: 10.1155/2023/1879554. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe world is presently in crisis facing an outbreak of a health-threatening microorganism known as COVID-19, responsible for causing uncommon viral pneumonia in humans. The virus was first reported in Wuhan, China, in early December 2019, and it quickly became a global concern due to the pandemic. Challenges in this regard have been compounded by the emergence of several variants such as B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P1, and B.1.617, which show an increase in transmission power and resistance to therapies and vaccines. Ongoing researches are ...

Revision of fluoroquinolone breakpoints used for interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility testing of canine bacterial isolates
Am J Vet Res. 2023 Sep 6:1-7. doi: 10.2460/ajvr.23.07.0159. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agents, enrofloxacin and marbofloxacin, were US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved in the United States for use in dogs in 1988 and 1999, respectively. There have been many advances since then concerning the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) evaluation of fluoroquinolones, and there are data available on the susceptibility of targeted pathogens since the original approval. Using this information, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibil...

Evidence based optimal dosing of intravenous artesunate in children with severe falciparum malaria
In this study, we performed population pharmacokinetic modeling of plasma concentration data from 80 children with severe falciparum malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo who were given 2.4 mg/kg of artesunate intravenously. Bayesian hierarchical modeling and a two-compartment parent drug-metabolite pharmacokinetic model for artesunate were used to describe the population pharmacokinetics of artesunate and its main biologically active metabolite dihydroartemisinin. We then generated a virtual population representative of the target population in which the drug is used and simulated the total first-dose exposures. Our...

Enhanced stability and photothermal efficiency of Indocyanine Green J-aggregates by nanoformulation with Calix4arene for photothermal therapy of cancers
Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces. 2023 Aug 15;230:113516. doi: 10.1016/j.colsurfb.2023.113516. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhotothermal therapy (PTT) is a method of growing attention, owing to its controllable process, high efficiency and minimal side effect. Indocyanine Green (ICG) is as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved agent that stands on the frontline of further developments of PTT toward clinics. However, the applicability of ICG-mediated PTT is limited by the rapid in vivo clearance and photo-degradation of ICG. To improve those parameters, nanosized ICG-loaded nanoparticles (ICG-J/CX) were fabricated in th...

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of immune response of poly(lactic acid) nanoparticles with different end groups
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 31:126593. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126593. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoly(lactic acid) (PLA) has excellent properties of biodegradability and biocompatibility, which is a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved biopolymer for the preparation of safe and effective vaccines, drugs, and gene delivery systems. However, there still exists a great problem whether and how the end group affects the immune response of PLA vaccines. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo of immune response of PLA nanoparticles (NPs) with carboxyl (COOH) and ester (COOR)...

Breast cancer immunotherapy: a comprehensive review
Clin Exp Med. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1007/s10238-023-01177-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCancer remains a major health problem despite numerous new medical interventions that have been introduced in recent years. One of the major choices for cancer therapy is so-called adoptive cell therapy (ACT). ACT can be performed using both innate immune cells, including dendritic cells (DCs), natural killer (NK) cells, and γδ T cells and acquired immune T cells. It has become possible to utilize these cells in both their native and modified states in clinical studies. Because of considerable success in cancer treatment, ACT now pla...
