Value of PET imaging in head and neck cancer
HNO. 2023 Sep 13. doi: 10.1007/s00106-023-01354-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe combination of positron-emission tomography (PET) with cross-sectional imaging in particular is becoming increasingly important in the diagnosis of head and neck tumors because, in addition to pure anatomy, the metabolic activity of tissue can be visualized and assessed. The combination of PET and computed tomography (CT) is already an established procedure in head and neck tumor patients in some indications, e.g., for primary tumor detection in cancer of unknown primary (CUP) syndrome or also after completed primary radio(chemo)therapy fo...

Finding Power in My Panic Attacks
Trouble started in the form of rivulets of sweat dampening the waistband of my underwear. It was a bluebird afternoon in Phoenix in December of 2020, mid 60s, desert dry, and my heart was jackhammering against my ribcage. Breathing felt like I was sucking air through a stir straw. A small ABC News crew was arrayed before me, ready to broadcast the report I’d written that day, but with my vision narrowed to a needle’s eye, I could barely see them. I tried to swallow away the sandiness in my mouth but realized I’d forgotten how. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] “I can’t swallow!...

Risk Factors for the Prescription of Ineffective Antiviral Candidates for COVID-19 During the Early Pandemic Period in Korea
CONCLUSION: Ineffective antiviral agents were prescribed to a substantial number of patients during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea. Treatment with these ineffective drugs tended to be prolonged in severely ill patients and in primary and public hospitals.PMID:37698205 | PMC:PMC10497349 | DOI:10.3346/jkms.2023.38.e280

6 Things to Do if Your Doctor Isn ’ t Listening to You
Liz Helms still remembers the way her doctor looked at her 30 years ago, when she described the severe pain she was experiencing in the area around her jaw. She told him she had limited facial movement and frequent muscle spasms, and that it felt like she was being struck by lightning again and again. She cataloged the ways her life had turned upside down. “But I could see it in his face—he either wasn’t listening or didn’t believe me,” Helms says. She remembers thinking: “They treat animals better than they’re treating humans.” [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] ...

Sociodemographic Disparities in Craniosynostosis: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Minority craniosynostosis patients experience delays in intervention and increased complication rates. Our findings highlight the importance of expedited and equitable referrals, screenings, and treatment, and the need for a standardized approach to investigating longitudinal demographic and outcomes data in this population.PMID:37691284 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231199832

Context-aware driver risk prediction with telematics data
This study focuses on using telematics data and contextual information (e.g., road type, daylight) to represent a driver's style through tensor representations. Drivers with similar behaviors are identified by clustering their representations, forming risk cohorts. Past at-fault traffic accidents and citations serve as partial risk labels. The relative magnitude of average records (per driver) for each cohort indicates their risk label, such as low or high risk, which can be transferred to drivers in a cohort. A classifier is then constructed using augmented risk labels and driving style representations to predict driving ...

New governance of the digital health agency: a way out of the joint decision trap to implement electronic health records in Germany?
Health Econ Policy Law. 2023 Sep 11:1-20. doi: 10.1017/S1744133123000142. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFragmentation in health systems leads to discontinuities in the provision of health services, reduces the effectiveness of interventions, and increases costs. In international comparisons, Germany is notably lagging in the context of healthcare (data) integration. Despite various political efforts spanning decades, intersectoral care and integrated health data remain controversial and are still in an embryonic phase in the country. Even more than 2 years after its launch, electronic health record (elektronische Patienten...
