Protection against COVID-19 hospitalisation conferred by primary-series vaccination with AZD1222 in non-boosted individuals: first vaccine effectiveness results of the European COVIDRIVE study and meta-regression analysis
We report a prespecified interim analysis of primary-series AZD1222 (ChAdOx1 nCoV-19) VE.METHODS: Seven Study Contributors in Europe collected data on individuals aged ≥18 years who were hospitalised with severe acute respiratory infection (June 1st, 2021-September 5th, 2022) and eligible for COVID-19 vaccination prior to hospitalisation. In this test-negative case-control study, individuals were defined as test-positive cases or test-negative controls (SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR) and were either fully vaccinated (two AZD1222 doses, 4-12 weeks apart, completed ≥14 days prior to symptom onset; no booster doses) or unvaccinated (...

Political quarrel overshadows vaccination advocacy: How the vaccine debate on Brazilian Twitter was framed by anti-vaxxers during Bolsonaro administration
Vaccine. 2023 Aug 5:S0264-410X(23)00921-0. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.075. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite Brazil's tradition of successful mass immunization programs, the country has been experiencing alarming declines in vaccination coverage, especially among children. That is aggravated by the growth of anti-vaccine movements and the spread of health misinformation in social media in the last decade, which have worsened during the COVID-19 outbreak. Several reports link populism and far-right politicians to anti-vaccination support worldwide, which was also the case in Brazil during president Jair Bolsonaro's ...

Central respiratory command and microglia: An early-life partnership
Curr Opin Neurobiol. 2023 Aug 4;82:102756. doi: 10.1016/j.conb.2023.102756. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMicroglia, brain-resident macrophages, are key players in brain development, regulating synapse density, shaping neural circuits, contributing to plasticity, and maintaining nervous tissue homeostasis. These functions are ensured from early prenatal development until maturity, in normal and pathological states of the central nervous system. Microglia dysfunction can be involved in several neurodevelopmental disorders, some of which are associated with respiratory deficits. Breathing is a rhythmic motor behavior generat...

Leveraging an implementation science partnership network to understand how Federally Qualified Health Centers operationalize and address health equity
We examined how health equity was operationalized and addressed at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). We conducted semi-structured interviews with leadership (n = 19) and staff (n = 12) at 10 FQHCs in an implementation science partnership network for cancer control equity to understand how they operationalized and addressed health equity. We performed rapid qualitative analysis and shared findings with a larger group of 13 community health centers (including the 10 FQHCs) at an Implementation Learning Community (ILC) to identify action areas for research and practice, followed by a second phase of synthesizing qua...

Long-running ProMED email service for alerting world to disease outbreaks is in trouble
The first news about the COVID-19 pandemic came not from a government or a scientific publication, but in an email from a disease-alert system called ProMED . This fateful missive in December 2019 about a few cases of a mysterious pneumonia in Wuhan, China, is just one example of how physicians and public health experts around the world have used the 30-year-old, free service to share real-time information about local disease outbreaks with tens of thousands of subscribers. But ProMED is now on life support. Much of its work came to a screeching halt yesterday when 21 of its 38 paid editors and moderators went o...

Advancing novel therapies for neurodegeneration through an innovative model for industry-academia collaborations: A decade of the Eisai-UCL experience
This article outlines the Eisai-University College London (UCL) Drug Discovery and Development Collaboration as a case study of how to implement a productive industry-academic partnership. In the first 10 years, seven projects have been established and the first project, a novel anti-tau antibody for Alzheimer's disease, has entered clinical trials, providing early validation of this collaboration model.PMID:37541423 | DOI:10.1016/j.drudis.2023.103732
