Fixing the broken patient search experience
Try the following exercise: Google ‘My cancer story rocks’ and read about how dog worming medicine is being enthusiastically discussed on YouTube and Facebook as a cancer cure.   Now imagine what else might be popping up in the billion daily healthcare search engine results, which is the first place most people turn the moment they experience symptoms, long before they contact their doctor. The haphazard nature of many searches may prevent patients seeking the right care, induce them to embrace quackery or reject the very medicines which offer the best treatment. “The results patients are getting are woeful,” s...

Cato Files Brief Challenging Qualified Immunity for Warrantless Strip Search of 4-Year-Old
For over a year, Cato has been leading the charge to challenge the doctrine ofqualified immunity:  an atextual, ahistorical doctrine invented by the Supreme Court in the 1960s, which shields government agents from liability for misconduct – even when they break the law. Today marks a huge milestone in that ongoing campaign, as Cato has just filed an amicus brief in support of anew cert petition calling on the Court to reconsider this doctrine. So has adiverse, cross-ideological alliance of over a dozen prominent public interest groups, as well a group of leading qualified immunity scholars. In the words of Wyatt Earp: ...

Are global R&D partnerships enough to increase a company's innovation performance? The role of search and integrative capacities
This study addresses this research gap by empirically analyzing the interrelation between global R&D partnerships, search and integrative capacities, and innovation performance. We tested our hypotheses on a sample of 112 medium-sized Italian firms with established GPs, leveraging a Partial Least Square (PLS) Structural Equation Model (SEM). Our results suggest that knowledge drawn from GPs plays a vital role in the innovation processes of the analyzed firms, but only when combined with the development of both of the internal sub-capacities we investigated (namely search and integrative capacities) thus, demonstrating an i...

Autophagy and senescence: A partnership in search of definition.
Abstract Autophagy and senescence share a number of characteristics, which suggests that both responses could serve to collaterally protect the cell from the toxicity of external stress such as radiation and chemotherapy and internal forms of stress such as telomere shortening and oncogene activation. Studies of oncogene activation in normal fibroblasts as well as exposure of tumor cells to chemotherapy have indicated that autophagy and senescence are closely related but not necessarily interdependent responses; specifically, interference with autophagy delays but does not abrogate senescence. The literature relat...
