Partially Neutralized Polyacrylic Acid as an Efficient Binder for Aqueous Ceramic-coated Separators for Lithium-ion Batteries
Chem Asian J. 2023 Aug 6:e202300538. doi: 10.1002/asia.202300538. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA partially neutralized polyacrylic acid (Pn-PAA) is used for coating sub-micron-sized α-alumina on a conventional microporous polyolefin separator, fabricating a ceramic-coated separator (CCS). Pn-PAA acts as a dispersant and binder by adsorbing itself on alpha(α)-alumina surfaces under acidic condition through the columbic interaction, providing a repulsive force to disperse fine alumina in aqueous suspension, and binds alumina strongly on plasma-treated separator through hydrogen bonding. This CCS shows favorable wettabilit...

Sulfur-Containing Foldamer-Based Artificial Lithium Channels
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Aug 4:e202305623. doi: 10.1002/anie.202305623. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnlike many other biologically relevant ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, etc) and protons, whose cellular concentrations are closely regulated by highly selective channel proteins, Li+ ion is unusual in that its concentration is well tolerated over many orders of magnitude and that no lithium-specific channel proteins have so far been identified. While one naturally evolved primary pathway for lithium ions to traverse across the cell membrane is through sodium channels by competing with sodium ions, highly sought-after artifi...
