Genistein and/or sulfasalazine ameliorate acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats via modulating INF- γ/JAK1/STAT1/IRF-1, TLR-4/NF-κB/IL-6, and JAK2/STAT3/COX-2 crosstalk
Biochem Pharmacol. 2023 Jul 4:115673. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2023.115673. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUlcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease in which the colon's lining becomes inflamed. Exploring herbal remedies that can recover mucosal damage is becoming popular in UC. The study aims to investigate the probable colo-protective effect of a natural isoflavone, genistein (GEN), and/or a drug, sulfasalazine (SZ), against acetic acid (AA)-induced UC in rats, in addition to exploring the possible underlying mechanisms. UC was induced by the intrarectal installation of 1-2 ml of 5% diluted AA f...

Acetic acid, growth rate, and mass transfer govern shifts in CO metabolism of Clostridium autoethanogenum
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Jul 6. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12670-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSyngas fermentation is a leading microbial process for the conversion of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen to valuable biochemicals. Clostridium autoethanogenum stands as a model organism for this process, showcasing its ability to convert syngas into ethanol industrially with simultaneous fixation of carbon and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. A deep understanding on the metabolism of this microorganism and the influence of operational conditions on fermentation performance is key to advance the technolo...

The effect of different decontamination processes on the residues of fipronil and its metabolites in chili fruits (Capsicum annuum L.)
Biomed Chromatogr. 2023 Jul 5:e5695. doi: 10.1002/bmc.5695. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFipronil is a broad-spectrum phenyl pyrazole insecticide that has a high degree of environmental toxicity. Commonly available chilies in the market are treated with fipronil insecticides. Demand for insecticide-free chili has thus been increasing globally. This needs various sustainable and economical methods to remove insecticides from chilies. The present study examined the effectiveness of several cleaning methods to remove pesticide residues in chili fruits. A supervised field trial was conducted in randomized block design at Raja...

Systematic literature review of primary and secondary cervical cancer prevention programs in South America
CONCLUSIONS: No documents were found about a national HPV vaccination program in French Guiana and Venezuela, and no official guidelines for cervical cancer screening were found for Suriname and Venezuela; thus, it will be difficult to eliminate this public health problem in these countries. Countries in South America must update their guidelines for HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening as new evidence emerges. Official websites with information about HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening are important sources that can be accessed by health professionals and the population.PMID:37405122 | PMC:PMC10317248 |...

Genome engineering of Kluyveromyces marxianus for high D-(  -)-lactic acid production under low pH conditions
This study is a pioneer work of engineering K. marxianus to produce D-lactate at the yield approaching theoretical maximum using simple batch process. Our results support the potential of an engineered K. marxianus for D-lactate production on an industrial scale. KEY POINTS: • K. marxianus was engineered by deleting PDC1 and expressing codon-optimized D-ldhA. • The strain allowed high D-lactate titer and yield under pH ranging from 3.5 to 5.0. • The strain produced 66 g/L D-lactate at 30 °C from molasses without any additional nutrients.PMID:37405435 | DOI:10.1007/s00253-023-12658-2

Vitexin inhibits pain and itch behavior via modulating TRPV4 activity in mice
This study aimed to explore the antinociceptive and anti-pruritic effects of MJS and whether its effects are mediated via the TRPV4 pathway. Mice were treated with MJS (7.5 mg/kg) 0.5 h prior to the initiation of the pain or itch modeling process. The results showed that MJS suppressed pain-like behavior in hot plate, thermal infiltration, glacial acetic acid twisting, and formalin tests. Administration of MJS decreased the pruritus response induced by histamine, C48/80, chloroquine and BAM8-22 within 30 min. MJS reduced scratching bouts and lessened the wiping reaction of mice under TRPV4 activation by GSK101 (10 µg/5 μ...
