Conceptualizing multiplicity spectrum experiences: A systematic review and thematic synthesis
DISCUSSION: This review highlights heterogeneity within multiplicity-spectrum experiences, emphasizing the need for person-centred, individualized understanding, separate from mental health conceptualizations. Therefore, training in person-centred individualized care to promote self-concept clarity is needed across health, education and social care. This systematic review is the first to synthesize voices of people with lived experience across the multiplicity spectrum, demonstrating how qualitative research can contribute to advancing our understanding of this complex phenomena with the community, acknowledging reciprocal...

Epidemiology of Spinocerebellar Ataxias in Europe
Cerebellum. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s12311-023-01600-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a heterogenous group of rare neurodegenerative conditions sharing an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. More than 40 SCAs have been genetically determined. However, a systematic review of SCA epidemiology in Europe is still missing. Here we performed a narrative review of the literature on the epidemiology of the most common SCAs in Europe. PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE were searched from inception until 1 April 2023. All English peer-reviewed articles published were considered and then filtered ...

AI pitfalls and what not to do: Mitigating bias in AI
We describe these pitfalls by framing them in the larger AI lifecycle from problem definition, dataset selection and curation, model training and deployment emphasizing that bias exists across a spectrum and is a sequela of a combination of both human and machine factors.PMID:37698583 | DOI:10.1259/bjr.20230023

Artificial intelligence in mental healthcare: a scoping review
Br J Radiol. 2023 Sep 12:20230213. doi: 10.1259/bjr.20230213. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTArtificial intelligence is disrupting the field of mental healthcare through applications in computational psychiatry, which leverages quantitative techniques to inform our understanding, detection, and treatment of mental illnesses. This paper provides an overview of artificial intelligence technologies in modern mental healthcare and surveys recent advances made by researchers, focusing on the nascent field of digital psychiatry. We also consider the ethical implications of artificial intelligence playing a greater role in mental ...

AI in medical imaging grand challenges: translation from competition to research benefit and patient care
Br J Radiol. 2023 Sep 12:20221152. doi: 10.1259/bjr.20221152. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTArtificial intelligence (AI), in one form or another, has been a part of medical imaging for decades. The recent evolution of AI into approaches such as deep learning has dramatically accelerated the application of AI across a wide range of radiologic settings. Despite the promises of AI, developers and users of AI technology must be fully aware of its potential biases and pitfalls, and this knowledge must be incorporated throughout the AI system development pipeline that involves training, validation, and testing. Grand challenges ...

Izokibep for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis: a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, dose-finding multicentre study including long-term treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Data from this phase II study indicate that izokibep is well tolerated and efficacious in the treatment of plaque psoriasis. Higher doses or more frequent dosing could be explored to further enhance response rates.PMID:37697683 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad186

Successes and challenges in extracting information from DICOM image databases for audit and research
Br J Radiol. 2023 Sep 12:20230104. doi: 10.1259/bjr.20230104. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn radiography, much valuable associated data (metadata) is generated during image acquisition. The current setup of picture archive and communication systems (PACS) can make extraction of this metadata difficult, especially as it is typically stored with the image. The aim of this work is to examine the current challenges in extracting image metadata and to discuss the potential benefits of using this rich information. This work focuses on breast screening, though the conclusions are applicable to other modalities. The data stored i...

Exploring the pain and disability continuum in adolescents with non-traumatic anterior knee pain: a mediation analysis using individual participant data of prospective studies
CONCLUSION: We found an effect of pain on sports-related disability at 6 months which appears to be independent of lower extremity muscle strength, or depression/anxiety and knee confidence in adolescents with non-traumatic anterior knee pain.PMID:37699655 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107177

Dietary palm oil enhances SREBP2-mediated cholesterol biosynthesis through inducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in muscle of large yellow croaker ( < em > Larimichthys crocea < /em > )
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 13:1-27. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523001344. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2) is considered to be a major regulator to control cholesterol homeostasis in mammals. However, the role of SREBP2 in teleost remains poorly understand. Here, we explored the molecular characterization of SREBP2 and identified SREBP2 as a key modulator for 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) and 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) which were rate-limiting enzymes of cholesterol biosynthesis. Moreover, dietary palm oil (PO) in vivo or palmitic acid (PA) treatmen...
