Can smartphone-based response inhibition training elicit sustained changes in appetite, preference, and cravings for energy-dense foods? A free-living randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Although significant reductions in reward-related appetite were observed, free-living response inhibition training did not offer additional benefit over a control activity. Future intervention studies with observable food intake are needed to investigate which appetitive mechanisms most reliably predict eating behaviour over time.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Retrospectively registered with ANZCTR [ACTRN12622001502729].PMID:37704590 | DOI:10.1111/bjhp.12693

Deep learning detection of diabetic retinopathy in Scotland's diabetic eye screening programme
CONCLUSION: A deep learning-based system for DR grading was evaluated in QA data and images from 11 years in 50% of people attending a national DR screening programme. The system could reduce the manual grading workload at the same sensitivity compared with the current automated grading system.PMID:37704266 | DOI:10.1136/bjo-2023-323395

Learning strategies and reading achievement in primary schools: Longitudinal relationship and gender differences
CONCLUSIONS: Memorization strategies play a prominent role in promoting deeper strategies and reading achievement in Chinese primary schools, which might relate to culture and developmental stages. Higher achievement or positive feedback from learning results might be motivation for using different strategies, especially for boys.PMID:37704586 | DOI:10.1111/bjep.12634

Exploring examinees' responses to constructed response items with a supervised topic model
In this study, we introduce a new supervised topic model that incorporates finite-mixture modelling into the SLDA. This new model can detect latent groups of participants that have different relationships between their textual responses and associated scores. The model is illustrated with an example from an analysis of a set of textual responses and paired scores from a middle grades assessment of science inquiry knowledge. A simulation study is presented to investigate the performance of the proposed model under practical testing conditions.PMID:37702452 | DOI:10.1111/bmsp.12319

Dietary palm oil enhances SREBP2-mediated cholesterol biosynthesis through inducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in muscle of large yellow croaker ( < em > Larimichthys crocea < /em > )
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 13:1-27. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523001344. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSterol regulatory element-binding protein 2 (SREBP2) is considered to be a major regulator to control cholesterol homeostasis in mammals. However, the role of SREBP2 in teleost remains poorly understand. Here, we explored the molecular characterization of SREBP2 and identified SREBP2 as a key modulator for 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) and 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) which were rate-limiting enzymes of cholesterol biosynthesis. Moreover, dietary palm oil (PO) in vivo or palmitic acid (PA) treatmen...

Izokibep for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis: a phase II, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, dose-finding multicentre study including long-term treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Data from this phase II study indicate that izokibep is well tolerated and efficacious in the treatment of plaque psoriasis. Higher doses or more frequent dosing could be explored to further enhance response rates.PMID:37697683 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad186

Epidemiology of Spinocerebellar Ataxias in Europe
Cerebellum. 2023 Sep 12. doi: 10.1007/s12311-023-01600-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a heterogenous group of rare neurodegenerative conditions sharing an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. More than 40 SCAs have been genetically determined. However, a systematic review of SCA epidemiology in Europe is still missing. Here we performed a narrative review of the literature on the epidemiology of the most common SCAs in Europe. PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE were searched from inception until 1 April 2023. All English peer-reviewed articles published were considered and then filtered ...

Exploring the pain and disability continuum in adolescents with non-traumatic anterior knee pain: a mediation analysis using individual participant data of prospective studies
CONCLUSION: We found an effect of pain on sports-related disability at 6 months which appears to be independent of lower extremity muscle strength, or depression/anxiety and knee confidence in adolescents with non-traumatic anterior knee pain.PMID:37699655 | DOI:10.1136/bjsports-2023-107177
