Effect of oral versus parenteral vitamin D3 supplementation on nuclear factor- κB and platelet aggregation in type 2 diabetic patients
In conclusion, restoring normal levels of vitamin D is an important determinant to maintain normal platelet function and reduce inflammation. Nevertheless, further long-term studies are still needed.PMID:37721213 | DOI:10.1139/cjpp-2022-0359

A Good Investment: Expanding Capacity to Care for Older Adults in the Home and Community Care Sector Through Increased Personal Support Worker Wages
Can J Aging. 2023 Sep 18:1-6. doi: 10.1017/S0714980823000557. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMost older adults prefer to age in place, which for many will require home and community care (HCC) support. Unfortunately, HCC capacity is insufficient to meet demand due in part to low wages, particularly for personal support workers (PSWs) who provide the majority of paid care. Using Ontario as a case study, this paper estimates the cost and capacity impacts of implementing wage parity between PSWs employed in HCC and institutional long-term care (ILTC). Specifically, we consider the cost of increased HCC PSW wages versus expecte...

Can J Aging. 2023 Sep 18:1-9. doi: 10.1017/S0714980823000491. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a deleterious impact on the lives of nurses who work in long-term care; however, the moral conditions of their work have been largely unexamined. The purpose of this qualitative study, therefore, was to explore registered practical nurses' (RPNs) experiences of the moral habitability of long-term care environments in Ontario, Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four themes were identified: (1) Striving to meet responsibilities in a failed system; (2) bearing the moral and emotional weight of residents'...

Phytotoxicity of weathered petroleum hydrocarbons in soil to boreal plant species
This study indicates that natural weathering of Fraction 2- and Fraction 3-concentrated soil did not eliminate phytotoxicity to boreal plant species. Furthermore, it builds on the limited existing literature for toxicity of PHCs on boreal plants and supports site remediation to existing Canadian provincial PHC guidelines.PMID:37717802 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2023.117136

Predictors of response to a lapse in anti-VEGF treatment in patients with macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion
CONCLUSIONS: Patients' responses to treatment lapses for ME secondary to RVO can be predicted with reasonable accuracy using readily available clinical data, particularly age, BMI, time since diagnosis, and history of dyslipidemia. Providers should consider these factors when counselling patients and determining follow-up schedules.PMID:37716706 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcjo.2023.08.002

Canadian Blood Services traceback investigation of a suspected case of transfusion-transmitted malaria
CONCLUSION: This was a probable transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) case from an eligible donor who in retrospect was found to have unrecognized, asymptomatic, semi-immune malaria infection, and who was potentially infectious. Blood donor lack of recall of prior malaria infection does not negate the risk of TTM from those who have lived in malaria-endemic countries.PMID:37715564 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17549
