Different oncological features of colorectal cancer codon-specific < em > KRAS < /em > mutations: Not codon 13 but codon 12 have prognostic value
CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that KRAS codon 13 mutation is less likely to serve as a prognostic biomarker than codon 12 mutation for CRC in a large-scale cohort.PMID:37701134 | PMC:PMC10494767 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v29.i32.4883

MicroRNAs Regulate Tumorigenesis by Downregulating SOCS3 Expression: An < em > In silico < /em > Approach
This study identifies the interactions of known (miR-203a-5p) and novel (miR-6756-5p, miR-6732-5p, miR-1203, miR-6887-5p) microRNAs with SOCS3 regions due to their maximum interactions. Identifying the interactions of these microRNAs with SOCS3 will significantly advance the understanding of oncomiRs (miRNAs that are associated with cancer development) in tumor development due to their influence on SOCS3 expression. These insights will assist in future studies to understand the significance of miRNA-SOCS3-associated tumor development and progression.PMID:37701630 | PMC:PMC10493049 | DOI:10.1177/11779322231193535

Utility of psychotherapy assessed with Kessler scale in a population of cancer patients undergoing systemic oncological treatment: a mono-institutional experience
CONCLUSIONS: The use of the K10 test is helpful in monitoring the degree of psychological distress of patients facing the diagnosis of cancer and who are about to start oncological treatment. Psychotherapy is effective in reducing the distress of these patients just a few months after starting treatment.PMID:37699600 | DOI:10.21037/cco-23-54

The predictive value of advanced lung cancer inflammation index for short-term outcomes and prognosis of colorectal cancer patients who underwent radical surgery
CONCLUSION: Lower ALI was associated with more postoperative complications, worse OS, and DFS for CRC patients who underwent radical surgery. Furthermore, ALI was an independent risk factor for overall complications, OS, and DFS. Surgeons should pay close attention to patients with low ALI before surgery and make clinical strategies cautiously.PMID:37700210 | DOI:10.1007/s10147-023-02410-1

SMiT: symmetric mask transformer for disease severity detection
CONCLUSION: SMiT uses a simpler strategy to achieve better results to assist physicians in making accurate clinical decisions, which can be an inspiration for making good use of the visual transformers in the field of medical imaging.PMID:37698681 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05223-x

Accounting for intensity variation in image analysis of large-scale multiplexed clinical trial datasets
This study reports an analytical approach to the largest multi-parameter immunoprofiling study of clinical trial samples to date. We analysed 12,592 tissue microarray (TMA) spots from 3,545 colorectal cancers sourced from more than 240 institutions in two clinical trials (QUASAR 2 and SCOT) stained for CD4, CD8, CD20, CD68, FoxP3, pan-cytokeratin, and DAPI by mIF. TMA slides were multi-spectrally imaged and analysed by cell-based and pixel-based marker analysis. We developed an adaptive thresholding method to account for inter- and intra-slide intensity variation in TMA analysis. Applying this method effectively ameliorate...

Unlocking the potential of targeting histone-modifying enzymes for treating IBD and CRC
Clin Epigenetics. 2023 Sep 11;15(1):146. doi: 10.1186/s13148-023-01562-1.ABSTRACTDysregulation of histone modifications has been implicated in the pathogenesis of both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). These diseases are characterized by chronic inflammation, and alterations in histone modifications have been linked to their development and progression. Furthermore, the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating immune responses and maintaining gut homeostasis, and it has been shown to exert effects on histone modifications and gene expression in host cells. Recent advances in our underst...
