What to Know About High Cholesterol in Kids
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., but it’s not something we usually associate with kids. In many cases, however, the seeds of heart attacks and strokes may be sown in childhood. That’s because high or abnormal cholesterol levels, which are a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, are not uncommon in kids. “People may feel that cholesterol is mostly an adult issue, which is not correct,” says Dr. Nivedita Patni, a pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s Health in Dallas and an assistant professor of pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. About 1 in 5 child...

Early statin use and cardiovascular outcomes after myocardial infarction: A population-based case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: Lack of statin therapy early after MI is associated with adverse outcomes across the spectrum of MI patients. Results underline the importance of timely statin use after MI.PMID:35803064 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.06.1019

Cardiodiabetology: Newer Pharmacologic Strategies for Reducing Cardiovascular Disease Risks
Can J Physiol Pharmacol. 2022 Jun 30. doi: 10.1139/cjpp-2022-0065. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlobally, nearly 500 million adults currently have diabetes, which is expected to increase to approximately 700 million by 2040. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and peripheral arterial disease, are the principal causes of death in persons with diabetes. Key to the prevention of CVD is optimization of associated risk factors. However, few persons with diabetes are at recommended targets for key CVD risk factors including LDL-cholesterol, blood pressure, HbA1c, nonsmoking st...

Modern Treatment of Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis —The Importance of Both Medical Therapy and Carotid Endarterectomy
Each year there are approximately 700  000 new ischemic strokes in the US, and 10% to 15% of them are caused by thromboembolism from a previously asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS). Three large randomized clinical trials, published in the 1990s and early 2000s, have demonstrated a significant benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) i n preventing stroke in patients with severe ACS compared with medical therapy alone. They showed a 50% relative risk reduction in 5-year stroke rate and an approximately 1% per year absolute stroke risk reduction. Over the course of the past 2 decades, there has been significant improvement...

A systematic review of randomized clinical trials on the efficacy and safety of pitavastatin
Conclusion The FDA proven indications of pitavastatin are primary dyslipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia as adjunctive therapy to dietary changes to lower total cholesterol, LDL-C, apolipoprotein B (Apo B), triglycerides (TG), and to increase HDL-C. Pitavastatin might be suitable for subjects with diabetes, ACS (reduced revascularization), metabolic syndrome, CKD, HIV, and subjects with low levels of HDL-C. We highly recommend rational individualization for the selection of statin.PMID:35642121 | DOI:10.2174/2772432817666220531115314
